Stray and Feral Cats

I love my Ring showing the cats on patrol around my house. They are on a timely schedule, so I know if I get the ring ding at a certain time, it is a cat and usually the same one. Orangie stops and poses when the voice tells her she is being recorded. A bit of a diva, I suppose, but the number one vole killer in the FF border patrol. Tunnel under my fence and you answer to the CEA - Cat Enforcement Agency. No sanctuary status granted here. :sneaky:

Our new neighbor lets her cats run free, and I don't have an issue with it as long as they don't use our garden beds as litter boxes. We used to leave the greenhouse doors open and we can no longer do that. There is also an apparently feral cat (tortoiseshell) that roams the property occasionally. Our own cats wiped out the ground-nesting bird population and it is just now beginning to recover as the new predators move in to disrupt it once again.

When I went out this morning to water the plants on my deck I heard someone spitting at me. I moved the raspberry canes a bit and saw a pretty, small cat on my lower deck looking back at me. He is not feral, I have seen him before, just not friendly. A neighborhood cat.
When I went out to water in the front, I noticed that he or some other critter matching his height had marked my front door frame.

He is welcome to all the chipmunks he can catch around my house.

@Ken Anderson , I've been wondering....... did you ever get Smokey to come in the house?
No, he had gotten to the point where I could pet him regularly, but he balked at being picked up or stepping through the door. For the past couple of weeks, he's been treating me like he thinks I'm going to kill him or something. He still comes for food but waits outside for me to set it down on the porch, go back inside, and close the interior door. I don't know what's going on with him.

Meanwhile, there's another beautiful male who, I think, has been homeless only since late winter or early spring, because that's when he first showed up here for food, but he looks well-groomed and not feral. In fact, he likes it when I stay on the porch with him while he eats because he's more worried about being approached by another cat or a raccoon, and I suppose he knows that I'll have his back.

He's not fully comfortable with me, but even when I picked him up one time, he struggled to be put back down, but did so very politely without using claws or teeth, and didn't run when I put him back down. He was just communicating that he didn't want to be held. I call him Sobaka, which means "new cat" or something similar in Russian, I think.

A couple of days ago, instead of placing the food dish on the porch, I set it on the landing, just inside the house, and he ate there, then took a few steps into my office to nose around. Ella was in the adjacent room on a futon and didn't feel the need to come out and object, although I'm sure she knew Sobaka had been inside. Once he went back out, Ella came out to sniff around where he had been, and then asked for a treat.

Last night, when Sobaka came, he didn't even give me the option. He faced the interior door, waiting for me to give him permission to come in. As soon as I opened the door, he walked into the house to wait for his food. First, I offered him taurine treats, and he ate them from my hand. Then he ate most of the cat food and explored pretty much everything in my office, even going under the bookcases, rolling over in Ella's scratcher, and climbing the cat tree.

While he was exploring, I closed the door. He looked, then decided it wasn't a threat and continued exploring. He considered going into the next room but probably realized Ella was there and decided not to. He went back to the outside door, finished the cat food, and then placed both his front paws on the door to ask me to open it. He walked out calmly and spent about five minutes rolling around on the scratcher that I had placed on the porch.

He's very polite. When he comes for food at night, he walks onto the porch far enough to trigger the motion detection light, then back out to the front step, and doesn't come back onto the porch until I say, "You can come in." He hisses at me once in a while, but I think he's just communicating that he's afraid of something because he doesn't show any other signs of anger. I take his occasional brief hiss to simply mean, "I'm scared," or "I don't know what to do."

I've carried Ella to the door a couple of times when Sobaka was eating, and she doesn't seem to care one way or another, although she hisses at a couple of other cats who come around. She's okay with Smoke too.

So, Sobaka has probably never survived a Maine winter and needs a home, so if he and Ella get along okay, which could simply mean that no one gets hurt, then I will take him in.

I am still open to taking Smoke in as well, and had expected to have him in by now, but instead he's moving in the other direction. Three cats is my limit, however. I have had five once, but three of them were related (mother and two daughters), and the other two were a mother and daughter, as well.

We've had some cool nights here, and I think he's looking for a home. He's very polite

I have no doubt that Ella was well aware that Sobaka was in the house, but she chose not to confront him. I couldn't sneak Bubba a treat while Ella was behind closed doors in the library because Ella would instantly become aware that he was getting treats and start scratching at the door, demanding equity. On the other hand, when I invited another cat (who comes during the day) into the house, Ella got in front of me to veto that invitation. Without any hissing or puffing up, the other cat got the message and didn't even come back to eat on the porch until I invited her.

I think she is okay with either Sobaka or Smoke, though I'm not sure how Sobaka and Smoke feel about each other. Smoke did walk onto the porch while Sobaka was there once, and Sobaka surrendered the food dish to him, although Sobaka is bigger, without any quarreling.

There are four cats whom I feed regularly on my enclosed porch. Because I don't want to attract raccoons, I don't leave any food on the porch after dark. Instead, the three cats who come at night have learned to enter the porch and trigger the light. My desk is only a few feet from the door, so I'll check to see who it is. Smoke and Sobaka usually stay on the porch to wait for me, while the other one, whom I call Siyah, will trigger the light, then go back outside to the top step, where I can still see him.

I will check to see who it is, as sometimes it's a raccoon. If it's a cat, I give them a wave. If it's Sobaka, I can open the door and talk to him, and I used to be able to do that with Smoke. Then, they will wait while I get the food and bring it to them.

It was interesting watching them learn to do that. Smoke picked up on it first, while Siyah struggles with trust issues. When he saw me at the door, he would sometimes run off and not come back until later, by which time I had either picked up the food or another cat had claimed it. Then, one night, the light triggered. I didn't see anyone, so I opened the door and asked if it was a kitty or a raccoon. He opened his eyes, and I could see that it was a cat. He is black, and when his face isn't right at the door or he isn't looking toward the opening in the sliding door, I can't see him at night.

A couple of weeks ago, he began putting his head through the door, having figured out that he had to be seen to be fed, and has done that consistently since. Twice in the past few days, he has tried to be brave enough to stay on the porch while I bring the food out. Sometimes, his panic takes over, and he can't do it, but he has managed it twice now.

I suspect that Sobaka stood back and watched the others to see how it was done, because the first time he came, I found him standing in the middle of the porch, looking up at the door. The past couple of nights, he has practically pressed his body up against the inside door because he wants to eat inside now.

The fourth cat comes only during the day and is too small to eat much at a time, so she comes back repeatedly, but I have seen her after dark only once, and that was barely after dark. Smoke used to be waiting for me in the morning, but he only comes late at night now, and Siyah makes daytime runs once in a while. I leave food out there in the daytime because the porch faces the street, and I haven't seen any raccoons coming around during the day.

By the way, I feed the ferals the same quality of food as I feed Ella, so they've been eating premium food for quite a while and appear to be very healthy, except for the one who comes during the day. Although she eats several times every day, she is very thin, and I suspect kidney problems. I don't know how old she is, but I have been feeding her, Sobaka, and Siyah for going on seven years now.

Sobaka was just here again, passing by a fresh dish of cat food on the porch to come to the door, wanting to be fed inside again. When he finished, he explored a couple more rooms of the house while Ella was in the library. Then, he placed his front paws on the door to ask to be let out, but when I opened it, the big black cat (Siyah) was blocking the exit.

Sobaka wanted to leave; Siyah wasn't going to give him an exit. That was more important to him than the food because he could have eaten the food, but didn't. Sobaka chose to go back into the house, finding safety there. About fifteen minutes later, he wanted out again, but Siyah was still holding his place in the doorway.

I couldn't pick Sobaka up and show him that Siyah was still there, and I didn't want him to think I was refusing to let him out, so I opened the door again and walked toward Siyah. I've been feeding him for about seven years, so I didn't want him to think I was chasing him away, so I talked gently to him but approached. He yielded, but only about six feet.

That was enough for Sobaka to get out. He crossed the street, and Siyah went to the street to vocalize some threat, but didn't pursue. With Sobaka gone, Siyah reentered the porch to claim the food, and later asked for seconds.

Ella needs to meet Sobaka. Tonight, she was in the library with the door closed, but she had two earlier opportunities to introduce herself; she chose to remain in an adjacent room, while Sobaka chose not to enter that room, which seems respectful.

After his encounter with Siyah, Sobaka didn't come last night. He came early tonight, just after dark, but wouldn't come into the house. He was very hungry, eating 5.5 oz of Blue Buffalo and 2.5 oz of Reveal. Had he come into the house tonight, he would probably have encountered Siyah again, since Siyah came just after Sobaka left. Smoke has been coming only once a night lately, although he used to come 3-4 times a day, and I haven't seen him yet today.

The outside cats that I feed will sometimes walk past one another without making threats, but they don't hang out together. Their main concern while eating is that another cat might come.

My neighbor across from me said that the cat (Kitty) loves me, LOL. I have to agree. My son knows who the original owner was emphasis on was and the Kitty is a male cat and has a history of allegedly impregnating female cats in the neighborhood LOL.

Kitty is at my heels the minute I come outside. Meowing constantly which I'm guessing means he is hungry. I found out one day that my next door neighbor had been feeding him. That explains why he was around and I would always shew him away. One day I gave him some sweet milk and my neighbor said 'Oh you feeding it too.' I said no I'm just giving it some milk.

So far I have gotten clawed once and Kitty has gotten swatted off my lap after jumping up on it. :giggle:

My eyes have not watered or itched so I'm doing pretty good in that area.

Funny story.

I came outside and saw a bone of some kind on the porch. I went to pick it up and Kitty jumped at it. I of course swatted at Kitty and picked up the bone and threw it away. Kitty went after it like a dog. :ROFLMAO: What do I have on my hands here with this cat?

I got a liquid cat dewormer on amazon for my barn cat. I could put it in the water or the food and he ingested it without objection. Just a thought.
