Random Political Discussion

We did it during the Civil War. The United States has no historical precedent for postponing a federal presidential election because the Constitution and federal statutes give Congress the sole authority to set the date, and no Congress has ever altered that national election timetable for war or emergency.
The Civil War was not an invasion by a foreign power. The Civil War was a very different situation than the war-invasion currently being fought in Ukraine. The Civil War was an intra-country conflict, a different situation than the war in Ukraine.

No one war is going to be identical in any way to any other war. Would the fact that people in Ukraine speak a different language from those in another war invalidate everything? Be real, please. That's a silly argument. You don't "fight for democracy" by cancelling elections. That is the point.

"Under Ukrainian law, elections cannot be held while martial law is in effect to ensure continuity of governance and support the nation’s defense."

Also the Civil War and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine are very different things. The elections in Ukraine weren't "canceled." They cannot held under martial law. That is the law.

I'm not sure what this message is saying.
Exactly what I posted. Ukraine is hunting deserters down by going from door to door. You can pull the number of Ukrainian men of fighting age seeking asylum. Considering that the normal asylum process throughout the EU for Ukrainians has been lifted or considerably eased quite a few are living off social benefits you can only dream of in the US.

And the president cleans house arbitrarily and taunts elections once the war is won.

That's quite the democracy they're trying to save there. If you think you might lose an upcoming election, declare martial law until you've killed enough people to be on the winning side of things again.

If the Civil War isn't good enough for you, for some odd reason, there's always World War II, which began (for us) with an attack on U.S. soil. No, of course, that's not the same thing. No two wars are the same thing, although Ukrainians split fairly evenly between supporting the Nazis and supporting the Allies.

Ukraine declared martial law in response to the full-scale military invasion and armed aggression launched by the [Russian Federation](https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/prezident-pidpisav-ukaz-pro-zaprovadzhennya-voyennogo-stanu-73109) on February 24, 2022. [1, 2]
## The 2022 Full-Scale Invasion

* The Decree: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 64/2022 immediately following the start of Russian missile strikes and ground offensives. [1, 2]
* The Purpose: The measure was enacted to repel the armed aggression, mobilize the national military and economy, protect state sovereignty, and ensure public safety and territorial integrity. [1, 2]
* Ongoing Extensions: The Ukrainian parliament ([Verkhovna Rada](https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-zelenskiy-martial-law-mobilization-russia/32678119.html)) has continually voted to extend martial law and general mobilization as the war persists. [3, 4]

## Previous 2018 Declaration

* Kerch Strait Incident: Ukraine previously imposed a limited 30-day period of martial law in late 2018 across 10 border regions.
* The Cause: That earlier action was a security response after Russian forces attacked and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in the [Kerch Strait](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_law_in_Ukraine) near Crimea. [5, 6, 7]

Ukraine declared martial law because of the Russian invasion of Feb 24th 2022. Not because elections were upcoming.

World War 2 in the United States did not involve a land invasion by enemy forces, a very different situation than the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

US diesel prices are in large part due to exports trying to shore up the rest of the world.

Europe's stubborn proxy war against Russia has cut off its nose to spite its face. This is leading to severe energy shortages with food shortages to follow. Europe seems hell-bent on escalating to an all-out war footing and is converting what industrial capacity they have to arms and munitions. The coming Winter is looking grim. Those with money are already looking to flee to warmer climes in the South of Spain or Florida before the airlines curtail service.

This is really long at over 54 minutes, but may the 1st 8 and last 5 minutes might give most of it without the lengthy details. It sounds like even Norway's North Sea oil fields are giving out.

All of which is wholly irrelevant to the point, which is that it's laughable to fight for democracy by not holding elections.
You can't hold elections while a large-scale land invasion is ongoing. Different situations [WW2 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine] are not comparable in every aspect. Ukrainian law doesn't allow elections under martial law.

What is the argument here? If Ukrainian law states no elections under martial law, that's the answer. United States policies or history have zero bearing on the laws of Ukraine.

And this thread is for short political "blurbs," so if the Ukraine argument needs to continue, perhaps a separate thread would be more appropriate. Thanks.

Breaking news on the home front:

It appears we will soon be graced with a new streaming service called Trump TV.

“—-The White House launched what it is calling "Trump TV" on the heels of President Donald Trump's ban on three media outletsfrom accessing the White House ‒ but so far, it's a lot of reruns.——“

“—-Teased heavily by the White House ahead of its Sept. 21 debut, Trump TV is not on cable television, it turns out. Trump TV is instead a new ——“.

And the oval shaped sandbox continues to fill up with 💩💩💩

Who actually cares about this war and what the law says? First Lady goes shopping at Tiffany’s, war widows have to scrape to survive, brain drain including gangs to the West. Competition to the current cough regime never lasts long.
