Is Ukraine a Democracy even if they don't hold elections?

The Democrats are always rooting for the enemies of the United States ? Considering Democrats "the enemy" seems like not a great idea to me. I've never heard any Democrat praise the horribly despotic, murderous Iranian regime. Some Democrats have criticized the president for starting an unnecessary war. He said that Iran's nuclear program had been dismantled. He underestimated how difficult toppling the regime would be using only air power. The Ukrainians are fighting to achieve a free, democratic society. I see nothing wrong with supporting them.

AI Overview

"The United States has approximately 45.4 million registered Democrats, according to voter registration data from USAFacts.

Because party registration is not tracked or required in every state, pollsters also measure party support by how many Americans identify with or lean toward the party.

By Registration and PollingRegistered Voters: Around 45.4 million Americans are officially registered as Democrats in states that track party affiliation.

Public Opinion: According to data from the Pew Research Center, about 47% of American adults identify as Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party. This includes roughly 29% who strictly identify as Democrats and 19% who lean
democratic."
Please look at the numbers of Ukrainian refugees all over Europe who are of fighting age. Then look at how the Ukraine hunts down deserters or dodgers. Let’s not get into changes of senior leadership not being compliant with ideology.

When ? Did it do this when the nation was invaded by a foreign power ?
We did it during the Civil War. The United States has no historical precedent for postponing a federal presidential election because the Constitution and federal statutes give Congress the sole authority to set the date, and no Congress has ever altered that national election timetable for war or emergency.

The Civil War was not an invasion by a foreign power. The Civil War was a very different situation than the war-invasion currently being fought in Ukraine. The Civil War was an intra-country conflict, a different situation than the war in Ukraine.

No one war is going to be identical in any way to any other war. Would the fact that people in Ukraine speak a different language from those in another war invalidate everything? Be real, please. That's a silly argument. You don't "fight for democracy" by cancelling elections. That is the point.

"Under Ukrainian law, elections cannot be held while martial law is in effect to ensure continuity of governance and support the nation’s defense."

Also the Civil War and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine are very different things. The elections in Ukraine weren't "canceled." They cannot held under martial law. That is the law.

I'm not sure what this message is saying.
Exactly what I posted. Ukraine is hunting deserters down by going from door to door. You can pull the number of Ukrainian men of fighting age seeking asylum. Considering that the normal asylum process throughout the EU for Ukrainians has been lifted or considerably eased quite a few are living off social benefits you can only dream of in the US.

And the president cleans house arbitrarily and taunts elections once the war is won.

That's quite the democracy they're trying to save there. If you think you might lose an upcoming election, declare martial law until you've killed enough people to be on the winning side of things again.

If the Civil War isn't good enough for you, for some odd reason, there's always World War II, which began (for us) with an attack on U.S. soil. No, of course, that's not the same thing. No two wars are the same thing, although Ukrainians split fairly evenly between supporting the Nazis and supporting the Allies.

Ukraine declared martial law in response to the full-scale military invasion and armed aggression launched by the [Russian Federation](https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/prezident-pidpisav-ukaz-pro-zaprovadzhennya-voyennogo-stanu-73109) on February 24, 2022. [1, 2]
## The 2022 Full-Scale Invasion

* The Decree: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 64/2022 immediately following the start of Russian missile strikes and ground offensives. [1, 2]
* The Purpose: The measure was enacted to repel the armed aggression, mobilize the national military and economy, protect state sovereignty, and ensure public safety and territorial integrity. [1, 2]
* Ongoing Extensions: The Ukrainian parliament ([Verkhovna Rada](https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-zelenskiy-martial-law-mobilization-russia/32678119.html)) has continually voted to extend martial law and general mobilization as the war persists. [3, 4]

## Previous 2018 Declaration

* Kerch Strait Incident: Ukraine previously imposed a limited 30-day period of martial law in late 2018 across 10 border regions.
* The Cause: That earlier action was a security response after Russian forces attacked and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in the [Kerch Strait](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_law_in_Ukraine) near Crimea. [5, 6, 7]

Ukraine declared martial law because of the Russian invasion of Feb 24th 2022. Not because elections were upcoming.

World War 2 in the United States did not involve a land invasion by enemy forces, a very different situation than the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
