Is Ukraine a Democracy even if they don't hold elections?

Ukraine declared martial law in response to the full-scale military invasion and armed aggression launched by the [Russian Federation](https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/prezident-pidpisav-ukaz-pro-zaprovadzhennya-voyennogo-stanu-73109) on February 24, 2022. [1, 2]
## The 2022 Full-Scale Invasion

* The Decree: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 64/2022 immediately following the start of Russian missile strikes and ground offensives. [1, 2]
* The Purpose: The measure was enacted to repel the armed aggression, mobilize the national military and economy, protect state sovereignty, and ensure public safety and territorial integrity. [1, 2]
* Ongoing Extensions: The Ukrainian parliament ([Verkhovna Rada](https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-zelenskiy-martial-law-mobilization-russia/32678119.html)) has continually voted to extend martial law and general mobilization as the war persists. [3, 4]

## Previous 2018 Declaration

* Kerch Strait Incident: Ukraine previously imposed a limited 30-day period of martial law in late 2018 across 10 border regions.
* The Cause: That earlier action was a security response after Russian forces attacked and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in the [Kerch Strait](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_law_in_Ukraine) near Crimea. [5, 6, 7]

All of which is wholly irrelevant to the point, which is that it's laughable to fight for democracy by not holding elections.
You can't hold elections while a large-scale land invasion is ongoing. Different situations [WW2 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine] are not comparable in every aspect. Ukrainian law doesn't allow elections under martial law.

Who actually cares about this war and what the law says? First Lady goes shopping at Tiffany’s, war widows have to scrape to survive, brain drain including gangs to the West. Competition to the current cough regime never lasts long.

A war, or anything else, for that matter, that is identical to another in every aspect, is the same war. Besides, it's irrelevant to the discussion.
I fail to see why it's irrelevant. Ukraine cannot hold elections because of martial law, the Russian invasion. Comparisons with WW2 U. S. elections are not helpful. The situations are very different.

Oh, I see. Because Ukraine is not the United States, they can do whatever the hell they want, and we're still supposed to consider them to be a democracy. I get it, but then there's no point in continuing the discussion.

Ukraine cannot hold elections because of martial law ...... Comparisons with WW2 U. S. elections are not helpful. The situations are very different.
The presidents of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko in 2018 and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2022, both declared martial law
and cancelled the elections, because they were going to lose, and to gain authoritarian power over the Ukrainian citizens.
Zelenskyy at the same time declared that all able-bodied men from 18–60 years old were not allowed to leave the country as
they were forced to join the military, regardless of their personal feelings on the matter.

This is indeed a rehash of WWII when the U.S. military machine, specifically the Bush family, funded Germany and Japan
with weapons to invade and attack Russia and China, which they did. Japan invaded and killed more than 35 million Chinese
before they made a turnaround, defeated Japan and drove them out of their country. Likewise Russia defeated the German troops
and drove them back out of their country too. It was Russia and China who "won" WWII, certainly not Germany and the United States.

This current fiasco, with the U.S. and EU sending weapons and troops to Zelenskyy to attack Russia, is quite similar to WWII.

The United States fought against Nazi Germany & Hitler in World War 2. The United States did not fund Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

Russia attacked Ukraine, a sovereign, independent nation.

In World War 2, the U.S. did not experience a full-scale land and air invasion as Ukraine is experiencing. If it had, elections would have been postponed.

Conscription is normal in wartine.

Martial law was declared because of the Russian invasion. Ukrainian law doesn't allow elections under martial law.

Read a history book written by an actual professional historian.

As usual, Paul, you ignore what was actually said and argue something that wasn't said. Ukraine was officially aligned with the Allies, but only because it was part of Russia. Ukrainians, on the other hand, were divided, with many - perhaps the majority - of them actively supporting the Nazis and participating in the genocide of their Jewish population.
The part of what is now Ukraine that leaned more towards the side of Russia and the Allies during World War II is the part that is under contention, with Russia claiming it, while the Ukrainian people saw Germany as a way of breaking free from Russia.
