Meat

OK, I need this recipe ASAP. :D
I hope I did the link right. 🤦‍♀️

It used to be that a can of chili cost around a dollar m/l, depending on the brand. Now that same can of chili is almost $3 a can, even with generic chili, like Walmart. It has almost no meat in the can, and is pretty much just chili beans and seasoning, so I do not see why the price has about tripled recently.
Some of the other canned foods that have meat have gone up, but not as much as the cans of chili beans have. And if I get the cans of just chili beans with no meat, it is still under a dollar per can.

I'm sure it's the price of beef. Our favorite BBQ joint just closed its doors after 27 years because of the high price of meat. A 3-lb chuck roast that I used to get for under $10 is now close to $40. Something's got to give with meat prices, especially beef.

Wasn't there an issue with some disease causing beef herds to be culled? IIRC, it takes 3 years to build them back up.

What I know about is the screw worm. The U.S. spent a lot of money and effort to eliminate it from the American herds, but it was introduced again by importing live cattle from Mexico. Further imports were stopped, but we had become reliant on cheap imported cattle, so American ranchers couldn't keep up with demand, and feed prices skyrocketed during the Covid fiasco, so Americans cut their herds as well. That is why there was temporary lowering of beef prices at the beginning of Covid as ranchers sent their herds to slaughter to reduce their costs.

@Beth Gallagher - I cook chuck steak this way-give it a pound or to with meat hammer. Slap in a hot cast iron skillet, with butter or olive oil. Sear on both sides until done. Or I have put in oven after searing on 350 for a bit. Depends on how thick it is.
We have no problem eating.
No it ain't no rib eye, but can be tasty. I use to buy the ground turkey patties, and sear them in cast iron skillet with olive oil and spices.. tasty to me. I have used ground chicken, but yuck always makes me feel icy touching it. Why I do not know,
On another note- beginning to think eating at the senior center here, would be easier and cheaper in the long run. Still have not gone there yet.

I think that a lot of the seniors here in Huntsville must be doing that. Our senior center parking lot is always packed full clear to the outer edges of the parking lot up until after lunch time. I have only been there once or twice, a lot of years ago, but I remember looking at their brochure and they did offer some kind of lunch for seniors..
some places also deliver meals for seniors and shut-ins, called Meals on Wheels; but I don’t really know much about that either, or where all if it offered.
Each year, I like cooking less and less, and we have been eating foods that are simple to prepare now; but I still like ordering groceries and choosing foods that Bobby and I enjoy rather than what might be served at a senior center or delivery service.

We were just making our tuna salad sandwiches for supper and I was thinking the same thing, Yvonne. I used to love cooking but I find myself taking more shortcuts now. Rotisserie chicken, carry out food, sandwiches, salads, grocery store deli items, etc. If I didn't have my husband to cook for I'd probably exist on fruit, crackers and cheese.

We just went through 25 best NYT 2025 recipes and picked several. Food can be fun and enjoyable.
I did read up on the senior center lunches. 99 cents. For $2 I can wing a decent meal with meat, starch, vegetable.
