House Passes Bill to Make Daylight Savings Time Permanent

When we drive to Georgia, my phone automatically changes when we cross the time zone border in Florida. It is a setting that can be turned on/off in the phone settings.
Do you know how a watch might change if it's not tethered to a phone? Enabling the e-SIM is an option. And I don't believe they do satellite.

I decided to google for the answer and found this. The option still has to be turned on in Watch settings.

"Yes, your Apple Watch changes timezones automatically as long as the Set Automatically feature is turned on. If connected to your phone, it syncs from the iPhone. If disconnected (or if you have a cellular model), it relies on its built-in GPS or known Wi-Fi networks to detect your new location and update accordingly."

Thanks for that. I forgot about the GPS functionality. The watch has a built-in GPS receiver. I believe you need to have Location Services enabled.

It will be confusing if some states are on DST and some on Standard Time, but at least we won’t be switching back and forth twice each year, and states can decide themselves which time they want to be on.
I started in Procurement in the pre-internet days of the 70s. Back then, a bunch of different time standards would have been confusing as I placed phone orders or got verbal quotes. These days with so much being done electronically I can't imagine it will impact commerce all that much. The folks who would be most at risk are those who fly a lot. Arrival/Departure times could be confusing.

Daylight time has nothing to do with farming or ranching! Never has and never will! This was a great liberal lie that was forced on farmers and ranchers. It was started solely for the recreators. boaters, fishers, water skiers, and golfers, that kind of person.

Farmers, ranchers, construction workers, and especially roofers hated it. Losing that cooler early daylight summer morning hour, really created a problem for outdoor working folks.

This was a modern history study at some point in my school days. I thought I knew what the original reason was for daylight savings time so I went digging. I found this:

Daylight Saving Time (DST) was primarily created to conserve fuel and energy during times of crisis.—-“

Part of this did not copy over, but it was to conserve fuel during the war effort in 1918.

My parents had a small dairy operation. Dad also worked as a master machinist 35 miles away to actually pay the bills because the dairying on our small scale was not that productive.

Dad absolutely hated flipping times back-and-forth because it meant him adjusting almost double to the time changes because he had a job where he punched the time clock 35 miles away, but there were cattle who needed milked on time.

Anyone who knows dairy cattle knows you’ve got to be there when the bags are full and need emptied or you’ve got health problems plus loss of income. It is not like raising beef cattle where you just throw them out in the pasture, put a tag in their ear, give them vaccinations and be done with it. For that reason, dad hated the time changes.

******

I think I have commented previously that I am sick to death of the time changes and I don’t care which way they go just find one and stick to it.

Either way, Not everybody is going to be happy, but nobody is happy about everything in this country anyway so BFD to those who don’t get their way — “ there are bigger fish to fry then time change”, as my mom used to say.

If one is already retired, what the heck difference does it make anyway —- make the adjustments and stop whining.

Good afternoon to all-

Connie Bennet- I agree with you. Let the time be one thing or the other- just settle and go with it.

And you never lied when you talk about dairy farming and dairy cows. If you want to have a very time-limited life, try being dairy farmer for a while. And it doesn't matter if you have a single Jersey for home use or 200 Holsteins for a commercial operation. You MUST be there morning and evening to milk and properly handle the milk- and those cows accept no excuses if you've not there...

I'm glad I don't have to milk any more...

you all be safe and keep well- Ed

Politicians from coastal states (Florida) with strong tourist economies are pushing to make it permanent for the reasons you stated.

Why does anyone believe that time is gained or lost?? Just adjust your schedule and get on with it. Geesh. My father was a farmer and I don't believe he looked at a clock unless he had an appointment. He woke up at sunrise and was feeding livestock at the same "time" every morning, no matter what the clock said.

Yeh, I'm not sure farmers were ever really affected by this. Being "out of synch" with others for an hour in the winter months would only make a difference if they wanted to call the feed store or a mechanic or something like that. And these days I gotta think most farms are owned by Big Agra, so you're talking about employees still working their core hours be arriving an hour early and leaving an hour early relative to the rest of the locals.
