Another "after I'm gone" topic between my husband and me is what we will do when one of us is left on our own. There is no way I can take care of this house and the swimming pool, etc. if my husband dies before me. All of our children and grandkids live hours away from us and we really don't want to be a bother to them.
I was talking to my son recently and this topic came up. He said there is always a room for me (or my husband) at his house. I appreciate that, but there's no way I'd ever move in with any of my children and be a burden to them. Not going to happen. But... he does live in a rural setting on 24 acres, which would allow us to set up a small mobile home, tiny home, etc. on his property.
That would allow close proximity (for emergencies) while maintaining a self-reliant distance for privacy. So that seems like an acceptable plan, with fall-back being an 'independent living' apartment.
