Gardening

Our ground heaves every winter. You can tell by how the sliding doors react. It did not occur to me that it brought up rocks (until we hit some) and that is why farmers have to 'pick rocks' every so often. I figured once you pulled stumps and cleared a field, built your stone fences, you were done.
I was young and foolish. :giggle:
Yep, any where the ground freezes to any depth, you get rock movement. Our place is on what was likely a glacial moraine at one time, so there are lots of rocks, but the drainage is great once the thin soil thaws.

Hopefully the sprinkler system is fixed. There is a special place for contractors in afterlife!

Chard is exploding as is dill, peas are finally blooming. Cosmos and star gazers offer free buffet for pollinators and hummers. Holly hocks as everywhere.

SO added two bird houses last week. Seven have tenants and are on their second clutch. For two days a blue bird tried to move in but he wanted furnished while nobody wanted to leave.

The side of my house became over run with overgrown weeds. I hired a 2 gardeners to pull the weeds, and lay weed blocker to prevent there return. It turned out good. There is a raised bed there already, I want to add more raised beds and some pots. Before and after photos below.

I started two pots of potatoes a few weeks ago, they are doing well. The leaves look healthy and are a nice dark green.

Unless somebody volunteers to help, looks like all my vegetable gardening is going to be either in pots or raised beds. I will start planting every my seedlings this week. I may have the purchase more soil for the pots and raised beds.

Good morning !

The Apple tree is McIntosh

Bought some zucchini plants for the garden , someone there said to wait til June to plant them 🤔

Some green beans also

Going to try to plant some flowers with seeds !

The weatherman says thunderstorms and rain for a few days ☺️🤗

Happy gardening everyone 🤷
We may have similar climates @Jacqueline Lindt depending on what part of Canada you occupy. We seldom if ever put any type of squash or pumpkin into the garden before June, but we do plant cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, leeks, and kale out side in May. We also plant the greenhouses in May (or sometimes before that). Do you have a greenhouse, a tunnel or anything like that? We often put low tunnels over the squash and pumpkins after planting to give them a head start. The tunnels have to be removed once the zucchini and other squash begin to bloom to allow pollination. Be sure not to disturb the roots when transplanting squash and cucumbers. Seeds usually know when to emerge from the soil, so when planting seeds, it is not a big problem. Do you know this YouTube channel?

Our plant sale is over, and we are now selling plants from our home. We have been working in the greenhouses since fairly early this morning. I am taking a snack and back break while wife is dealing with a customer who has a 17-year old autistic son with her. I have locked my self in as the boy will come into the house, wander everywhere, search through the cupboards and closets, turn on whatever devices he can find, and mom makes no effort to keep him controlled. The garden areas are tilled, but nothing is planted there, and nothing in the raised beds either. It is still below freezing at night, so we will have to heat the big greenhouse via woodstove when we retire every evening. I will be using the tractor to haul wood over this afternoon.

I forgot to mention the moose episode. We were hardening plants off , and wife decided to put all the cole crops out over night. I asked her not to risk that, so she only left two flats--Brussels sprouts and kale--out for the night. A visiting moose cleaned them both out. We would have lost everything in the crucifers had she done what she intended. I still have to get the electric fence done around the gardens so stuff can be planted there. An angry bull knocked down the fence charger and the stump it was attached to last fall, and I have not yet gotten it repaired. Both fence chargers have been taken out by moose. I think they can hear the buzzing and it makes them angry, especially in rut.

I bought a rosemary plant at Bunnings , planted it in a pot and it’s died , however I may have occidentally found out why while mixing up a watering can of seasol in the effort to save my plum tree , it says on the bottle of seasol do not use on Mediterranean type plants like rosemary
I did … it may regrow after winter …it cost me $6 for a small plant 🪴
