Honestly, lighting the oven has never even crossed my mind when the power is out.
Yeah, we don't bother with the oven if we can light the stove top. Baking isn't a priority if the power is out, but cooking on the stovetop is uselful.Honestly, lighting the oven has never even crossed my mind when the power is out.
Since most of our outages are in the summertime, I don't want more heat in the house. And of course, many things can be "baked" on top of a slow burner in cast iron.Yeah, we don't bother with the oven if we can light the stove top. I recommend these lanterns. The batteries recharge so you don't have to keep buying them & they light up a large room for several hours. They'll also charge your phone.Just like @Tony Nathanson, I wonder how long we will be without power. And like @Beth Gallagher, I get text messages alerts from our power company.
We have a small generator that we can use to keep the refrigerator and freezer going and a few other things, if we need to. I also have some LED candles in little lanterns that I use to give a little lighting in room. They are very useful to set in bathrooms too. I keep a supply of batteries. The LED candles are much safer than all the lit candles that I have used in the past; because I am a worrier about burning the house down yet too.We also have a gas fireplace we can use.
Usually, the power isn't out too long. But just long enough sometimes to ramp up my annoyance and inconvenience.
