What is the first thing you think of when the power goes out?

In this weather, I would not cook during an outage either. We have lots of vegetative matter on our counters or outside the door. We have canned goods and dry goods that don't need cooking, maybe just add water. I dare say anything I want cooked today i could do just setting it out on the deck.

I think about the refrigerators and freezer. I have 3 battery power stations that will run the big fridge in the main house, the small fridge in my shed/cabin and the deep freezer in the storage shed. It's hot here in the summer, so there's enough power for my swamp cooler in the cabin and a spare larger swamp cooler for the main house. I also have a fourth dedicated 12-volt power station to charge all electronics. 500-watts of solar panels in case of an extended outage.

They won't run they main AC/furnace, washer/dryer, or large oven, but I have lower powered toaster/ovens, a portable washer, and several hot plates so I don't have to go into caveman mode;)

The first thing I think of is more like a reaction than a thought. e.g. Oh Crap ! We must have overloaded the kitchen / living room circuits again !
Next, if we find that we aren’t at fault, we wait until the power comes back on. Generally speaking, the only thing we really need is patience.

I think Yvonne has covered the rest in her post. No need to be repetitious.

Just like @Tony Nathanson, I wonder how long we will be without power. And like @Beth Gallagher, I get text messages alerts from our power company.

We have a small generator that we can use to keep the refrigerator and freezer going and a few other things, if we need to. I also have some LED candles in little lanterns that I use to give a little lighting in room. They are very useful to set in bathrooms too. I keep a supply of batteries. The LED candles are much safer than all the lit candles that I have used in the past; because I am a worrier about burning the house down yet too. 😧We also have a gas fireplace we can use.

Usually, the power isn't out too long. But just long enough sometimes to ramp up my annoyance and inconvenience.

I recommend these lanterns. The batteries recharge so you don't have to keep buying them & they light up a large room for several hours. They'll also charge your phone.
