The load shifting is automatic, I use two powerbanks set up as time-shifting UPS automations. I have about $1300 invested in that. I have learned enough now to do the same for maybe $1000. I'm in my 2nd Summer season on that.
I have another $120 in smaller powerbanks and portable solar panels. I use those to "catch and bucket" sunshine, which I "pour" into my fixed powerbanks for additional savings and use to power lights indoors, charge devices, run electric kettles, fans, etc. These also top up my car battery and charge the batteries for the lawn mower, string trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, and a pole saw for trimming trees, etc.
Air conditioning (AC) is managed by cooling the house as much as possible naturally at night if humidity is reasonable, making sure the basement gets cooled down using a fan. Good way to get fresh air exchange as well. Then early in the day I run the AC in bursts to chill a little bit and draw out moisture. When the peak rate time arrive I don't let the AC run, relying on just solar powered fans as needed.
There is expense there, sure, and a share of activity. But I admit it's just a hobby activity with exercise getting up to lug stuff outdoors and back in, drag panels around to chase the sunlight between tall trees here, etc.
I've shed 70 to 80 pounds over the past 2 years.
