What Are You Doing Today?

Staying inside where it is cool. The Heat index will reach 110 degrees today.🥵

We also have a roofer contractor coming by to day to give an estimate on replacing our house roof and 3 out buildings.💰💸
Real temp in the shade 106 at 10:30. It is getting to be unpleasant. The cooler on the front porch is empty every afternoon “free water, aqua gratis”. It has been near the front doors for 30 years all over the US.

I'm going to the dermatologist tomorrow for a skin cancer scan. I had one melanoma removed from my nose 5-6 years ago and had a scare last year that ended up just being an infection. It took me over 6 months to get in for that to be looked at, and the dermatologist had me worried because it was "spiraled and deep," meaning "probably aggressive"...and it took 6 months to get it looked at. Everything else was clean.

So now I gotta go in once a year to maintain "current patient" status in case I have another issue and don't want to wait 6 months to get seen. I'm consuming resources merely to stake out a place in line "just in case." I feel bad, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
You can do it. Is the location near a place for a John treat?

Maybe. But dermatology is in the hospital in downtown Charlottesville. Between the hospital and the university, it is so crowded I just want to get the heck outta there. The city is at 300% capacity. I gotta arrive at least 45 minutes early because of the parking situation. The hospital sends a text telling you to leave plenty of time because of parking. Maybe if I get there early while others are still circling the parking garage they'll take me in and I can get out of there. There are several satellite medical centers. I don't know why dermatology is in the hospital and cardiology is in a satellite center...it's not as though skin exams are gonna cause emergency situations. Maybe I need to find a dermatologist outside of the UVA system.

I might stop off somewhere on my way home and grab a bite.

Let me see. I didn't get up until 11 am, but then I got to sleep about 4 am after taking a hike in the woods in the dark, so that's not as bad as it sounds. I watched podcasts for a half hour or so while drinking coffee, then fed Ella and one of the porch cats who was waiting for me. I went for a 30-minute walk, then spent some time picking maple seeds out of my gardens. Smoke, the outside cat I am hoping to adopt, hung out with me for about an hour or so, so I lay down on the grass for a while, and he lay down a couple of feet from me. He seemed pretty comfortable and happy, rolling over on his back. Then, he followed me to the porch, and I fed him. I worked on my web directory job for a few hours, then went for another walk in the woods. After returning, I brought some compostables out to my compost pile and buried them in the pile. I did some more work on my web directory job, fed a couple more cats, then went for another walk in the woods after dark, and now I am here reporting on all that before going back to work on my directory job. When I walk in the woods at night, I usually walk along a trail that I am familiar with, although it does involve crossing a stream on a log. I bring a flashlight but try not to use it.

We were scheduled for a new roof beginning on July 13, but the rain has postponed all the roofing jobs. The current roof was put on by our twin sons 28 years ago when they were 18. Both had apprenticed with a roofing contractor, so he lent them all the equipment and even the dump truck to haul away the tear-off. I don't know when it will get done.

We were intending to go to Palmer to pay our property taxes today and to dump some stuff at the thrift store there, but we may have to postpone that as my wife had developed a "twinge" in her back. She has gone to her church job this morning, but isn't sure she will be able to tolerate the fairly long drive.

The rain has stopped for the moment, so I may be able to get some garden/greenhouse stuff done if we don't go in to pay taxes.
Now there is a TEN year warranty on roofs. Maybe I should get a metal one next time.

First things first. Coffee and sofa lion and local news. Local commercials can be so funny.
SO will get back to his mud slinging project for a little while. Harvesting, going through the big freezer. Bessie is a two-door commercial beast. Some ironing. How can two people create so much laundry? SO expect dinner:)

One more time. I will replant the bean bed with my last bag of beans.
My neighbor said she saw a large fox. The last time a red fox showed up around here and all the rabbits disappeared. Last week I trapped a couple of chipmunks. They were coming in a swarm when I fed the chickens. I have not seen one in two days! We have also been infested by rabbits and all of a sudden they seem to be gone! Hope the fox moves on following those critters and not my hens.

I got in line for parking 45 minutes before my appointment and was barely on time. There is a satellite location for this hospital right up the road from me, and I thought that they no longer offered dermatology there. I was wrong. I drove right past the place on my way to the madness of the city. Next year I'll schedule it closer. I'm a dumbass.

We had problems with beans and snowshoe hares a few years. We fenced in the beans with a small mesh fence the critters couldn't get through and I started carrying a .22 mag revolver whenever I walked or rode the tractor around the place. I shot a few, but then I think a coyote moved into the area and the problem was solved.

While my wife done her job (work) in the spare bedroom, I washed/dried two sets of bed sheets, ran/unloaded the dishwasher, re-charged our boat trailer winch battery and washed/now drying our support stockings. Later, after wife gets off of work, we will go to the Complex Office and get our Grab-N-Go Picnic Dinner (served in bags?) that we will bring home and put in frig. Will eat when we get back from the Grand Opening of new Bass Pro Store down the freeway from us. We will now have both a Bass Pro Store and Scheels Sporting Goods Store very near us.

Besides early morning walk, I just helped a friend to her doc appointment and we had lunch. I saw the back room full of guys in cowboy hats and immediately knew they were the PRCA guys coming in early to get the upcoming PRCA rodeo last minute details in order. Rodeo time is about the only time we see many wearing cowboy hats, even though it is a farm and ranching area.

Just killing time watching TV since my eyes go wonky after a bit of reading and it is 105 outside. Low tonight in the mid 70s, so A/C 24/7 still a necessity. I was given some fresh peaches and they were tragic. Over ripe on the outer and way under ripe in the middle. No flavor, just blah!

Well, apple season is almost here so I pulled some of the apple pie filling I put up two years ago and made a pie. Last year was an off year but looks like plenty of apples coming this year, thanks to daughter watering fruit trees. Took hubby to a grand opening of a new hamburger place. The owners did what they could but I can't see it as any better than any of the other hamburger places around here. No technology so may appeal to old people. My neighbor knows I do wild food dinners and her property grows quite good chicken of the woods mushrooms. She brought me a perfect 4 pounder!!! So today I will cook it up, pack and freeze it in 1/2 pound servings.
Tonight is Bible study.

Took my trash to one of the drop-off centers.
Went by Sheetz and grabbed a to-go sub.
Early voted in the US Senate primary for my district.

On the way out, not far from my house, I got stuck behind a turd-brown Toyota Land Cruiser with antique tags. They went 35MPH the entire length of the 45MPH side road, then got on the main 55MPH road the same direction I was going and went 45MPH. I turned into the drop-off center and spent 10 minutes doing my thing. I continued on into town to get a sub, and there they were right in front of me again, also turning into Sheetz. (I don't know why there wasn't a line of cars behind them...it's the main road into town.) I got my sub, went to vote, and drove home. On the final leg of my drive home, guess who I came up on doing 10MPH under the speed limit? I don't get bothered by folks going under the speed limit (even a turd-brown Toyota)...that's life in the country. But I was beginning to feel as though I were in a Twilight Zone episode. Why was there no one behind them? Now I'm afraid to look out my window. If it's in my driveway, I don't wanna know.
