I had a good day with Smoke today. After acting like I was about to kill him for a month or so, today I was working in the backyard when another of the outside cats came by. I asked her if she wanted something to eat, not expecting her to follow me. But since I knew there wasn't any wet food on the porch, I walked to the house to set some out, and Smoke, not the other cat, walked in practically on my heels. He acted like everything was back to normal, and let me reach down and pet him, although he made it clear that he wasn't ready for a whole lot of that mushy stuff.
Smoke has often shadowed me while I was working in the backyard. Being dark gray, he can blend into the shadows easily, and I used to watch for him, although I haven't lately because of the way he has been acting towards me. When I invited the other cat in, he probably thought I was talking to him, or perhaps he just decided he'd claim the moment.
I set some Blue Buffalo, which he usually likes, out for him, but he began eating kibble instead, so I brought him some Earthborn, being stoked because he was being nice to me again. He didn't want that either and ate kibble, which is fine.
A few minutes after he left, I went back to the backyard to pick up leaves and pull some weeds, and saw him sitting in one of my gardens. I talked to him for a while, and he seemed to like being talked to. Then another of the outside cats (the one I was actually talking to earlier) started walking over to Smoke. She seemed calm about it, so I think that she's normally comfortable approaching him,
But he chased her away. Actually, he only took a few fast steps towards her, and she retreated across the railroad bed and a fence, crossing into the next block, which is where she usually goes when she leaves my yard. Smoke walked over to the fence, so I thought he was going to camp out there to make sure she didn't come back.
However, after picking up a few more leaves, I saw that Smoke had come back into my yard and was sitting on the grass. I lay down on the grass about six feet away from him and talked to him some more. He lay down on his side, facing me. After a while, he did the slow eye-blink thing that cats do when they are feeling comfortable with someone, or with another cat. I did that back to him a few times, then when I opened my eyes one of those times, he was gone.
I later saw him in another of my gardens, so I figured he wanted to go back to stealth mode, so I pretended not to have seen him. Later, he disappeared again, and I don't know where he went, but I found that the Earthborn had been eaten later, so he probably decided to return to the porch for the Earthborn; or it could have been one of the other cats.
Nothing dramatic, I suppose, but it's nice that Smoke doesn't still think I'm a cat killer.
