Shopping--What did you buy?

I called my hay guy to see if he is baling this year. He lives 45 miles SW of me, has had more rain, and has already baled 27 acres that has shipped further north.

The hay I buy is grass-mix for horses and is slower growing, so I have to call him back in five or so weeks. This is a good thing because I not only pay for delivery, I pay to have them stack, plus I always give the guys who do the stacking a bit of pocket money. I have time to save more 💸💸

Anyone who has stacked hay knows this is the one time when you think about tying your horse(s), or other livestock, to your mailbox with a sign that says “free”.

I can still feel the blisters on my 12 year old fingers when the trip rope on grandad’s hay forks didn’t trip and I was going up to the second story of the barn right behind the hay. Back then I only weighed ~100 pounds so the pickup truck on the other end had no idea I was still hanging on, hoping the rope would trip the forks 😲😲. I forget who hollered for grandma to stop the truck and back up, but I could have either lost my grip and fell or hung for dear life until I went thru the hay opening. Once I got my hands bandaged, we laughed — what else would you do🤠🤠

Then there was the time my neighbor across the road told me to “drop it NOW” and I knew there must be a rattlesnake in the hay bale I was picking up. Thankfully the mowing machine had cut the snake in half and only the rattles were left to hang out……..

Anyway, my 2026 annual hay order is in………
Cutting hay in rattlesnake country can be interesting. I took a job running swather, one summer, in a valley that is infested with rattle snakes. I always hated when the swather needed repairs, because cleaning it out, I usually found at least one rattlesnake. They rolled their hay, so the winter feeding hands, also got to see mutilated snakes when they unrolled the hay.

That is funny now, but It wasn’t then, lollol.

Believe this or not, I was surprised to find the Mississauga Swamp Rattlers that were in my area of NE Ohio ended up on the endangered list😳😳. I lived on the cusp of the Grand Valley and there were some really strange goings on in that vast area of wooded swampy land. It was also only about 35 miles outside Cleveland, OH which left it wide open as a dumping ground for “that’s one body that will never be found” as the county song goes😳😳

The guy who owned the local old timey roadhouse, was a coon hunter and also collected all sorts of things. In the 1960’s he had a bounty on these rattlers of $2/head. They allegedly were milked for the venom for serum.

The legend was they never crossed the state highway and that had to be true. We had 98 acres of pasture & woods on the south side and never saw one. The field that was baled with half the rattler hanging out of it was directly across the highway on the north side.

Last year 2 young men came up the drive asking if we seen any snakes , they too were venom hunting. Said venom serum is in short supply and gave us a card to call if we seen any snakes.

@Connie Bennett , why the sad face, it's just a show about history ,and a war lost.

Sorry Marie, My old age is showing🫣🫣

The noise and the raucous. Maybe I would have enjoyed it, if I had been there. My ears have always been sensitive, but they have become worse with age. It’s been eons since I’ve seen real fireworks.

I can’t believe I don’t know about this magnificent piece of granite. Reading material for tonight, so thank you🤠🤠
