Shopping--What did you buy?

I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a tackle box kind of thing for small parts, a 4' bungee cord with retaining clips on the hooks for my truck, and a few wall mounted LED lights to use in my closet for $2/each:

My hall closet has shelves for first aid supplies, OTC meds, linens & such. I mounted one light on the wall by each shelf. Hopefully they'll last.

I've not been in HF for most of the winter. The cashier wanted to know where I've been. 😁

Friggin' ALDI. They no longer carry that shepherd's pie I like so much. I only got to try it once.

Every darned time I find something there I like, they stop carrying it.

I went online to see where else I might get a frozen shepherd's pie, specifically the Bremer's. Bremer is an ALDI house brand. I found articles only 3 months old extolling its virtues, citing the price at $7 (versus the $2.25 I paid.) I guess it was cheap because they were doing a Discontinued Clearance on it. Walmart has one at the $7 price, but for that much, I'll just make my own. I wish I had known, I would have stocked up.

Went out to pick up medicates. While out, bumbled down to the Dollar Tree, second visit ever since it opened here, but our small grocery stores and such are all gone and gentrified into walled housing and retirement castles for well-off Californian transplants. Grabbed a loaf of mediocre bread (I use little now anyway) and a roll of paper towels and some uncooked spaghetti. I thought I might find some super-cheapie outdoor solar lights to browse through but I didn't see any.

That's my biggest gripe with Aldi. If I find a product I really like, it will never be seen again.

It seems to be a regular occurrence. I read an ALDI thread on another forum and folks were listing their favorite ALDI foods, so I took notes. A few weeks later, I couldn't find most of them on ALDI's website. An AI summary of a search says "Aldi frequently discontinues products due to its selective inventory strategy, which focuses on simplicity and efficiency, allowing them to offer lower prices. This means they carry fewer items, often resulting in popular products being removed to make room for new ones." That makes as much sense as the response I got from another store when they stopped carrying something I liked. "We sold so much of it, we couldn't keep it in stock, so we quit carrying it." Uh...OK. Great business strategy.

These days, I only go there because everyone else stopped carrying the 4 pak of specialty lettuce I like so much:

If they stop carrying this, I have no reason to go to the CVille store in the first place. The ALDI in the exurbs of Richmond 30 miles away has really cheap bottled water, but I'm only out that way once a month to pick up my specialty script.

You may want to take a bit of time and stroll through the store. There are bargains and store brands.
I gotta be honest, ever since stores went to scanning at the register and no longer put the price on the product, I've lost my frame of reference (and the visual reinforcement) of what I pay for stuff...except meats, which still have the price on them. Then there's the absence of print ads, where I used to compare and make my weekly list. (I got the Boomer Blues.)

A Wegman's opened up in the large town where I go to grocery shop 25 miles up the highway. Maybe I'll drop in and stroll around. I just wondered if it's a bargain place or upscale. I went to a Publix for the first time a couple of months ago, and even the BOGO stuff cost more than Walmart.

There are no grocery bargains anymore. You can compare adds on line. Generally on Wednesday the sites update. I found a local chain not having prices until you select a specific store. Does that help?
