Severe weather thread

It is on the way. Schools are closed. Companies are closing early. Grocery store shelves are bare.

Fireplace and generator run on natural gas. We can connect a dvd player to the living room tv. Garage is insulated and heated.

I am working on an overload of bread to share and SO will check on the neighbors. We have enough heavy duty extension cords and generator capacity to share.

They are saying that this storm might affect up to 40 states, and could be the worst of its kind on record. Here is the latest from Ryan Hall.

We're on exploding tree watch currently.

Some types of trees don't draw enough sap down for Winter at really cold temperatures. These can survive for decades and then one seaosn "crack, bang, boom" sporadic "gunshots" will crack through the night and limbs will fall or trees even split almost to ground level.

We had a huge tree fall yesterday, hit so hard felt like the ground shook. We think it was and old pecan tree, Jake is going to look now and see which tree fell.

They are now saying that there is another severe cold front following the one that hits this weekend, and we will have these super cold temps all the way into February. Some places in the north are going to be -50 (or worse) with the wind chill. Are you prepared for that long of that much cold, @Mary Stetler ? It looks like you are going to be in the coldest part of it.
Here is the latest information warning people about the extended cold.

Our point of exposure is potential ice storms taking out power lines (directly or via falling trees.) Some folks may not have any heat at all with temps getting down to 0°F (-18°C).

Does it often get that hot where you like, Kate? I think the only time I've been in heat like that has been in the desert region of New Mexico. As they say, it's a dry heat. But you're coastal.

Dig in, folks. The wrost thing is how long the impacts may be with everyone. I'll bet things like gasoline generators and kerosene stoves are hot items right now. Could really get ugly because you can't really "prep" for this quickly. I hope some hurricane survival goods will serve here... assuming people have that sort of thing laid in already. Much of this is probably North of areas where people have to take tropical severe weather seriously.

Fairly long-term loss of power and communications could be the worst of it, impacting other things like access to food and fuel and medications.

Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.
