I have found cutting the bottom out of the pumpkin, instead of the top makes lighting the pumpkin much easier. Lift the pumpkin, light the candle, reset the pumpkin. Just saw a vid where a woman pushed cookie cutters into and through the sides of the pumpkin.

Cookie cutter cut outs is a cool idea.
