I went outside early this morning to try and get rid of some of the vines that are growing like crazy everywhere. The mixture of sun and rain has made everything really grow like crazy, both the things we want to grow, and the weeds and vines we do not want to grow.

Same here with the weather and the vines. I resorted to pouring straight Clorox over the Virginia creeper and poison ivy behind the horses water tubs. It’s working to a point..

All of middle Tennessee is under a heat advisory. Our real temperatures are supposed to be in the mid 90s to possibly even 100 in some areas, putting the feels like 110 or more. We are predicted to be “—Stuck in this brutal heat—“. Through the end of August.

Thankfully, we do not have a drought. We’ve had plenty of rain with more to come tonight or tomorrow. I am trying very hard not to whine about this extreme heat, because I would rather see this than the polar opposite in the winter.

I worry for both my horses, even though I think they’re doing better than me lol lol. I have both the barrel fans running and I have stuck a bucket of water with a towel hanging over it to provide mist to some degree.

My dogs ask to go out 3-4 AM. They want to stay out an hhour or more just to get fresh air. I am so thankful for AC.


My horses are burning through Hay, at Mach 80. More than I ever have used in the 23 summers I have lived here. I’m going to end up having to buy more hay this fall. They have 19 acres of pasture, but they only go out to graze at night and spend their days inside because of the heat.

Plus, if they’re in the barn with the fans on them, they don’t get bit up by flies. Anyone who has owned a horse knows there isn’t a fly spray on the market that lasts much longer than 15 minutes.

Prayers and well wishes to those further north who just experienced a derecho.🙏🙏
 
Our two dogs are mostly out in the early mornings, too, and inside where it is cooler during the heat of the day, except for short potty runs off and on. The cats can be either in or outside, so they come back and forth as they please, and JellyBean still lies in the water on the sidewalk if it gets wet.
It looks like bad storms in Kentucky again, so I am glad those are missing you, @Connie Bennett .
 
Today is not so hot but muggy. I was going to work in the garden but will wait till tomorrow as it will be even cooler. Hopefully not up to 80's but I am spraying my clothes with Repel for the ticks. I want to go across the pastures too to check on some fruit trees. All seem to be bearing well. Some have branches almost touching the ground!
 
Temperatures are still delightful but it is cloudy this AM. We are getting to the point of needing rain. I may have to start watering again soon if no rain appears. I saw that the upper arctic has been having the coldest summer on record, so that may be affecting our weather down here. The upper arctic is from 80 degrees north and up to 90 north, so it is not a large area. The undersea volcano off the northern tip of Greenland has reportedly quieted, so the ice is coming back big time apparently. 70s F. during the day and 50s F. at night.
 
As of 7AM Tuesday, Virginia's drought conditions have greatly improved. The Drought Scale goes from D0 (Abnormally Dry) through D4 (Exceptional Drought.) Much of the state has been under D3 conditions (Extreme Drought), with my region persisting as the rest of the state improved. Compared to last week, we went from D3 (Extreme Drought) to D1 (Moderate Drought), skipping right over D2 (Severe Drought.) There are no D3 areas left in the state. (North Carolina still has some D3 areas, but they are shrinking.)

The storms in my part of the state have been intense n a very pin-point way. Earlier today just west of me they had severe thunderstorms and a lot of hail, where we just had storm watches and a little rain. These are some hailstones from 20 miles west of me that were posted on another forum:

It's funny the perspective shift you get when living in a rural area. I consider the surrounding counties to be "local" and am surprised when there are storms in one county but not the other, as though I were still living up north and the storms hit 2 blocks away but miss me.
 
Looks like our CA heat wave is over. Only around 85 today & the news reported a "Cooling Trend" coming up.
I heard it was so hot the past two weeks, drivers were being treated in the E.R. for severe sunburn.......of the middle finger.
