Guess I'll kick off the weather thread. It's 77°F and partly cloudy in Houston.
This means that they were rescued in time , this time, @Don Alaska ? I can see that would be a real danger up there where people think they can drive anywhere since there are roads on the ice.We hade a vehicle go through the ice. I reckon they got off the ice road and weren't familiar with things here. We have people go through almost every year. Many come here n the military and aren't familiar with the way ice works. If they stay on the ice roads, everything will be fine, but until the snow gets deep and they aren't limited to the roads by the snow, they think they can drive everywhere, then they hit the ice over a spring and fall through. Fortunately the areas where the springs are are generally fairly shallow, so the people inside can get out but they get hypothermic really quickly if someone doesn't save them.
Experienced drivers here can usually safely drive around the lakes and larger rivers, especially if they stay on the roads, as the ice under the roads is measured for safety. Even large trucks such as the septic tankers can drive on the ice roads for the coldest months. I remember going to bootcamp with guys from Alabama and the Minnesotans talking about driving on the ice to go ice fishing, but the Alabamans wouldn't believe you could drive on ice. When I lived in the bush, one of the rivers we were on had a 150-mile long ice road that served many of the villages on the river during the winter. That was particularly dangerous if they went off the ice roads though, and places where there were springs or swift water were dangerous or even open sometimes. Have you read, "To Light a Fire"?This means that they were rescued in time , this time, @Don Alaska ? About the same here. 17+wind chill factor, putting it in single digits. For the next couple of days.We are predicted to go down to 14/16 degrees tonight. Wind chill down to OMG!![]()
-10 C. is about +14 F. @Yvonne Smith. That is about what it is here too as long as the wind keeps blowing. If the wind stops, it will be -10 F. or lower. I haven't checked for wind damage today, but it was howling last night and some stuff is cancelled due to wind. I think Palmer might get gusts over 80 mph.‘The thing with weather is being able to deal with it. You are used to that kind of cold and the houses are insulated for it, and people dress for the cold. I know that -10c is not as cold as if it were -10f, but I am not sure of the difference and have to look it up.
We are at 18f here, 16 with windchill; but in the south, the homes do not have enough insulation or storm windows for cold weather. Our house is old, so there are lots of holes and air leaks all over, which makes it even worse.
When we do get snow, even an inch grinds everything to a halt, because people have no snow tires, and most native southerners have no experience driving in snow and icy conditions. The road people have no equipment to deal with the snow, so it just freezes onto the roads and stays there until it warms back up again, and the freeways have piles of cars and trucks that have wrecked in the snow.
Thankfully, it usually only happens once or twice each winter.
