How's the Weather Where You Are?

-24 F./-31 C. this morning as the temperature continues to fall. Talk about micro-climates. -24 F. at the house and +7 at the lake, all on our property. We have never seen this much difference. We have multiple thermometers at the house to confirm, but only one at the lake just 100 yards away. We watched the temperature rise near the lake during the night as I have a projection thermometer near my bed so I know what I am facing for the day, and it was -16 when I went to bed and +7 when I arose. Who knows, but it is the first time we have ever seen such a discrepancy in the 33+ years we have lived here.
 
It looks like there is a flood warning out for all of California, and pretty bad flooding in the northern part of the state. Are you in an area that is safe from the flooding, @Axel Slingerland ?
The flood map shows the worst of it is up near Redding, but there was some in the southern part of the state, too; so I was concerned if you are okay and safe where you live ?
 
It is warm at 64 degrees today. Santa is going to be wearing shorts and flip flops this year at Christmas. I'm ok with that! :cool: The temperture is supposed to be 70 degrees on Christmas. Winter is going to return a few days after that though.☃️

So, it is 56 here in Huntsville , but it is 330 in the morning, and is supposed to be up to 70 by midday, so it will be a warm Christmas Day for us today, and through the weekend, and then colder by Monday or so. We have been able to have the front door open during the middle part of the day and let fresh air in, which is always nice to be able to do.
 
We've had quite a bit of snow night before last and again last night, but it's been the fluffy stuff that is pretty easy to shovel, so it's been time consuming but not overly taxing. Besides the driveway, the sidewalk, and a path for the oil delivery guys, I shovel paths to get to the compost pile, to an outbuilding, and three paths leading to the railroad bed so that the stray or feral cats don't have to work their way through the snow. Plus, I walk the tracks sometimes.

My son loves to tell me "I'm glad we're not in Eureka" when it raining like crazy up there. We dealt with that for years. Now, we live in another place that is prone to flooding. Fortunately, not in our back yard, but close. There's canals and drainage ditches all over Bakersfield, but fortunately Edison is a little bit higher so most of the flood here flows down to the Kern River, flows through the middle of Bakersfield.

What actually concerns me more than flooding is that we are about 60 miles or so from the southern end of the San Andreas Fault. But Eureka was just 50 miles from the Mendocino Triple Junction, the most seismically active place on the west coast of the lower 48 states. So I am concerned, but not overly so... We lived in Eureka for 27 years. He's a short video about the "Christmas Earthquake", a 6.4 on 12/18/2022, just a few weeks before my Nightmare of 2023.

 
I am glad to know that you are safe from the flooding where you are at, @Axel Slingerland . Last night, I was seeing tornado warnings from somewhere in California, too; but I was just getting alerts and didn’t see where in California those were near.
It looks like more storms all along the West Coast are still happening. Stay safe, my Friend !
 
I used to vacation in Sawyer's Bar and Forks of Salmon, near Yreka, California. I know, it's not the same thing - hours away, I believe, but people confuse them all the time.
 
Indeed, they are. We used to go camping over on that side of the coast range because it's dryer up there than on the west side. One of our favorite haunts near there is Dunsmuir. We went there after overhearing someone in the lobby of the hotel where we were staying in Redding talking about Castle Crags State Park, and called them "California's Grand Tetons." I also heard them talking about Dunsmuir, and I looked it up on a map and it was only 50 miles to the park, and 52 to Dunsmuir. So that's where we went. Awesome place. A beautiful state park, and quint little western town.

It's in the 70's right now (nearly 9 p.m.) and the humidity is brutal... 95%. Looks like we get a break on Monday and have a little taste of winter.

Well, we had our snow but it wasn't anywhere what they said it would be..
They were calling for 30cms and we got about 10cms...
