Helpful forum tips

This can be used for any helpful tips that you have found that make navigating or using the board easier for someone else. I'll start with one. If you find that you're getting behind here, with a bunch of forums and threads showing as unread, and you don't have time to read them all, read the ones you know you'll be interested in, and then click near the top that reads "Mark forums read." It will set the threads as if you had read them, and you will subsequently only see, as unread, those that have been updated since you clicked that button. No one is going to quiz you on anything here, so don't feel like you need to read everything. Some of us are really, really boring, and you shouldn't feel like you need to keep up with it all.

The “Trending Content” box usually only shows the games being played, and not actual discussions. Is there some way of eliminating the game threads and just showing actual forum discussion threads there instead of just the games ?
Currently, that is not a standard option, though it has been suggested in the XenForo forums and upvoted by many people, so we might expect it in an update. There is a way to do it through template modifications, but I am trying to avoid modifying the template any further than I have to.

When creating or responding to a thread, keep in mind that your own words matter, your perspective is valuable, a conversation is richer when it's personal, and personal conversations are between people, not links or artificial intelligence. A forum discussion should be like a conversation you might have with someone over coffee or at the grocery store. Although facts are nice, it is the discussion that is valuable in a forum.

Post links if you have something to say about whatever it is that you're posting a link to, and keep in mind that most people won't click on your link anyhow. If you have no reason to believe that you or anyone else will be interested in discussing whatever you're linking to, then your link is simply taking up space. This is a discussion forum, not a news aggregator.

You might come across something that is of interest to you on another website, such as a blog, a news site, or a political column. Rather than copying and pasting it here or posting a link, it would be better if you read it yourself and learned enough about it that you can discuss it in your own words. I don't mind the link, though I probably won't click it; I'd rather know why it's important to you.

We've all learned stuff in elementary school, high school, college, or in the course of living our lives, and we don't feel the need to source everything we've learned. For example, I can discuss the American Civil War without quoting from textbooks. I might not remember everything accurately, or the textbook might not be accurate either, but nobody's world is going to come to an end if I say something that turns out to be wrong. Someone else will call me on it; we might all learn from it, and the discussion will be all the better for it. Let's carry on a discussion rather than posting dueling sources. Again, there's nothing wrong with sourcing information, but don't let it take the place of an actual discussion.

There are pros and cons to artificial intelligence. If you can learn from it, fine, but we'd rather hear from you. Don't let AI take the place of your brain. If I want to have a conversation with AI, I'll go to CoPilot or another form of AI and have that discussion. Here, it would be much better if our discussions were between the human beings who are members of the Seniors Only Club.

A "How to" would be helpful. I'm having some difficulty putting up an avatar but getting close. A "How to" for dummies.

What kind of difficulty are you having, Ed? An easy way to add an avatar is to click on your username at the top right side of the forum. When your account info pops up, hover your mouse over the avatar area and you should see "edit". Click on that, then upload your image.

I agree, @Ken Anderson . I come to SOC to "visit" and not read a bunch of links and watch a bunch of videos, though an occasional share of something funny or interesting is fun. Many times a video adds context to the topic as well.
Embedded videos don't cost us any resources, but photos and other images do, so these should contribute to the discussion. Sometimes, it can be interesting to know what other forum members are watching online, and since they (embedded videos) don't detract from our available resources, they aren't as concerning to me, but if no one is going to talk about it and it doesn't serve any purpose other than to take up space, it could be thought of as clutter.

While they serve a purpose and can be useful in some contexts, links are often a pet peeve for me because we should be able to talk about stuff without referring to other websites or experts, and they particularly annoy me when the full URL is posted rather than turning text into a link, which is easy enough to do here. Again, links can sometimes be helpful, but I don't think many people click them, and they too often detract rather than enhance a discussion. I am not harping as much on SEO as I did in the old forum, but there is also the fact that every outward link can slightly detract from our SEO, while links to our forum can slightly improve our standing in search engines. If the link adds to the discussion, fine, but it's a good idea to ask yourself whether it really does.

Photos and other images are the biggest hogs of our available resources, so I would like to beg people not to upload a photo or image to the forum just because they found it somewhere on the Internet and thought it was cute at the moment. If the photo is one you took yourself or of something you are discussing in the forum, it can enhance that thread and be worth the space it takes up. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but a thousand words are more valuable in a discussion forum, and they're much cheaper.

If you take a picture of your garden, your dog, your car, or anything else, these photos might be worth the cost because we care about you. If you're describing something you once owned but don't have a photo of, and you can find one that looks like the one you had, this might be worthwhile to include in a discussion as well. So, I am not saying don't post photos or images, but please be careful not to waste our resources. If no one is going to look at it after the day that you posted it, it will nevertheless take up the same amount of space for as long as the forum is here.

There are potential legal problems with posting images you find online, as well. Although it's rare for someone to sue over the use of copyrighted images in a seniors forum, we're not exempt from these laws, and taking the image down after the lawsuit has been filed won't necessarily remove the liability. So please, just because you can view an image online doesn't mean it's free to upload it to another site. On the old forum, I did get one threat of a lawsuit over the use of an image that someone had posted to a discussion. Since the warning came before the lawsuit, I was able to simply remove it, but there is no requirement to warn someone prior to a lawsuit. Plus, it's not good form to steal someone else's stuff.

Perhaps an image or story might be considered useful in a forum when it's connected to a story, a memory, a point, a feeling, a question, or a conversation. Otherwise, it's just decoration, and we can't afford to decorate.

I deleted a few pictures that I have posted; most of them had zero added value. (Mostly pictures in the "what did you buy" thread so who cares.) I will need to think before I post going forward.
That is a good idea, Beth. I will look back through the pictures I have posted, too. We still have all of the picture threads, and memes and that is where most of the useless pictures are at.

At the same time, I want people to think about what pictures they post, but I don't want any of you to be so afraid of posting a picture that we miss out on something important to you or others here. Nor do I want anyone to feel bad about anything they have uploaded; just think about whether it needs to be a picture.

Don't forget that there are free resources that host pictures and that can be linked to from here. The picture appears as though it is hosted here (just like any other pic you link from a website), but takes minimal forum resources. Every screenshot you see below is hosted by me on IMGUR, then linked to here.

I use Imgur. It's free. You do not need to create an account. Here's how to use it:

If you land on this screen when you go to Imgur.com click the New Post link:
XhIs8ds.jpeg

That will take you to this screen, which you may have initially arrived at. You can Drag 'n Drop pics to the "Drop Images Here" space, or click on "Choose Photo/Video" to browse your hard drive for them.

When you picture is uploaded, click on the 3 dots next to Copy Link to get the Drop Down menu, then click on Get Share links.
14zexyV.jpeg

Click on Copy Link next to BBCode (Forums). This copies the link to your Clipboard.

Then go to your Comment and paste the link directly into your Comment WITHOUT using the Insert Image function. You can right-click then choose Paste or use the shortcut CTRL + V.

Your image will appear after you hit Post Reply for your Comment.

I do not know the first thing about linking a photo that way, @John Brunner . I have amazon photos and also google photo. Can I link a photo from one of those, or do I have to sign up for a special photo website like the Imgur ?
I have been resizing the photos that I share , but they might still take up too much space ?

I believe, though I am not certain, that if the general public can access the image online without having to sign up or log in, then it can be linked.
