Helpful forum tips

I do not know the first thing about linking a photo that way, @John Brunner . I have amazon photos and also google photo. Can I link a photo from one of those, or do I have to sign up for a special photo website like the Imgur ?
I have been resizing the photos that I share , but they might still take up too much space ?
Amazon Photos: I can only find older conversations between users regarding this topic, but nothing in the Amazon Photos User stuff. Try right-clicking on a photo and seeing if you can create/copy a link to it to paste in the Insert Image functions, just as you would for any pic from a website.

Google Photos: A tech website said to Select ‘Share’ > ‘Create embed code’ (if available.)
A different tech site said you might see Create Link rather than Create embed code. Try pasting that link in the Insert Image function. If the link begins and ends with the [IMG} tags, paste it directly in your comment without using the Insert Image function.

Whichever you try, make sure to test it after linking it here by going to a different page/thread, then come back and see if it's still visible. Some folks said the pic disappears when they come back to the page, but the conversations I found were 5+ years old.

If that does not work, I can walk you through the IMGUR stuff. It's pretty easy, but looks complicated when each step is detailed like I did above. The simplified steps are:

>Go to IMGUR.com
>Upload a photo exactly as you would any other forum.
>Hover over the photo to display the Copy Link button and click on the three dots.
>Select Get Shared Links and click on the Copy Link by the BBCode (Forums)
>Paste that link directly into your Comment

>I followed your link.
>I clicked on the pic.
>The pic opened full-size in a new tab/window.
>I right-clicked and selected Copy Image Link.
>I pasted that into the URL field of the Insert Image function here.

I could not get it to work on the small image, I had to click it to open full size in a new tab first, then get the link to that.

This time, I went to google photo, clicked share, then copy, and I pasted it into the Minnesota thread. Going back to see if it is still there. Can you tell if this is now just a copy hosted on google or not ? If this is working, I can manage this. @John Brunner
Did you post a pic in the Man Killed By Federal Agents thread from Google? If so, I see it.

Yes, cat the pic is hosted on the Google site. The link for the cats pic is:

Thus far, until someone gives me a reason to limit it, you all have the ability to edit your own posts (please don't abuse it), so feel free to experiment.

Yes, and I posted it from the google site. Is it just copied here or did it embed ? That is what i can’t tell. Okay, @John Brunner , this time I shared a photo from Flickr, since it was on the list, and it looks like it shared all right on the forum. Will this work okay ?

For that image, I can view it if I click on the links, but it doesn't embed in the forum post. When I try to it from Insert Image/Link, it gives the following error: "Image cannot be loaded from the passed link."

Interestingly, when I quoted your post, it showed the image, perhaps because I had already visited the image by clicking on the link, storing it on my computer.

Embedded videos don't cost us any resources, but photos and other images do, so these should contribute to the discussion. Sometimes, it can be interesting to know what other forum members are watching online, and since they (embedded videos) don't detract from our available resources, they aren't as concerning to me, but if no one is going to talk about it and it doesn't serve any purpose other than to take up space, it could be thought of as clutter.

While they serve a purpose and can be useful in some contexts, links are often a pet peeve for me because we should be able to talk about stuff without referring to other websites or experts, and they particularly annoy me when the full URL is posted rather than turning text into a link, which is easy enough to do here. Again, links can sometimes be helpful, but I don't think many people click them, and they too often detract rather than enhance a discussion. I am not harping as much on SEO as I did in the old forum, but there is also the fact that every outward link can slightly detract from our SEO, while links to our forum can slightly improve our standing in search engines. If the link adds to the discussion, fine, but it's a good idea to ask yourself whether it really does.

Photos and other images are the biggest hogs of our available resources, so I would like to beg people not to upload a photo or image to the forum just because they found it somewhere on the Internet and thought it was cute at the moment. If the photo is one you took yourself or of something you are discussing in the forum, it can enhance that thread and be worth the space it takes up. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but a thousand words are more valuable in a discussion forum, and they're much cheaper.

If you take a picture of your garden, your dog, your car, or anything else, these photos might be worth the cost because we care about you. If you're describing something you once owned but don't have a photo of, and you can find one that looks like the one you had, this might be worthwhile to include in a discussion as well. So, I am not saying don't post photos or images, but please be careful not to waste our resources. If no one is going to look at it after the day that you posted it, it will nevertheless take up the same amount of space for as long as the forum is here.

There are potential legal problems with posting images you find online, as well. Although it's rare for someone to sue over the use of copyrighted images in a seniors forum, we're not exempt from these laws, and taking the image down after the lawsuit has been filed won't necessarily remove the liability. So please, just because you can view an image online doesn't mean it's free to upload it to another site. On the old forum, I did get one threat of a lawsuit over the use of an image that someone had posted to a discussion. Since the warning came before the lawsuit, I was able to simply remove it, but there is no requirement to warn someone prior to a lawsuit. Plus, it's not good form to steal someone else's stuff.

Could you elaborate on what these "resources "are? Is it space? How much is preferred for a pic? You can resize under "pictures " like I've been doing.

Yes, space is the largest factor, although threads with a bunch of images might load more slowly due to the image weight, which should be negligible. The main issue is space, which will accumulate over the years, since an image will take up space whether anyone is viewing the thread or not. Yes, photos resized to be smaller or optimized for a smaller file size would take up less space than those that have not been.

XenForo will reduce an image's visible size to fit the screen, but it won't reduce the image's actual size. However large it is when uploaded, is the amount of space it will take up.

Don't forget that there are free resources that host pictures and that can be linked to from here. The picture appears as though it is hosted here (just like any other pic you link from a website), but takes minimal forum resources. Every screenshot you see below is hosted by me on IMGUR, then linked to here.

I use Imgur. It's free. You do not need to create an account. Here's how to use it:

If you land on this screen when you go to Imgur.com click the New Post link:
XhIs8ds.jpeg

That will take you to this screen, which you may have initially arrived at. You can Drag 'n Drop pics to the "Drop Images Here" space, or click on "Choose Photo/Video" to browse your hard drive for them.
UPqUCz2.jpeg

When you picture is uploaded, click on the 3 dots next to Copy Link to get the Drop Down menu, then click on Get Share links.
14zexyV.jpeg

Click on Copy Link next to BBCode (Forums). This copies the link to your Clipboard.

Then go to your Comment and paste the link directly into your Comment WITHOUT using the Insert Image function. You can right-click then choose Paste or use the shortcut CTRL + V.

Your image will appear after you hit Post Reply for your Comment.

Personal photos on Imgur is all I use. I do put up videos from YouTube, mostly songs. Although I will use them for discussion on some subjects, although from now on I'll use much less.

The biggest problem with linking photos from another website is that the hosting site can move or delete them, breaking the link. Does anyone remember when Photobucket decided to be a subscription service after millions of images had been shared across the internet? When people didn't want to pay for the service (including me), those images disappeared from all forums/websites where they had been shared.

The fact is, storing files and photos takes up space that someone has to pay for, so fewer websites allow "free" image sharing and why should they? Besides the fact that most of us don't want to join yet another website/hosting service and have to link to our photos from there, which I have no interest in doing.

As for Amazon photos, they are not a public CDN. In other words, you can share a link to an Amazon photo but the picture will not appear in a forum post. The viewer can click on the link and see the image on Amazon but not on the forum post. I haven't checked Google photos in a long time but IIRC they don't allow direct imbedding either.

I cannot see the original comment by Yvonne that you have quoted, Ken. That is weird. Did it get deleted?

If you are linking a photo from a site that the public can access without a login or other type of barrier, click the "Insert Image" box above, then select the "Link" option; you'll be prompted for the URL.

I didn't realize that our posts in the humor and cartoon threads were wasting space. I think that anything that gives us a smile, maybe even a laugh, in these times fills a need. Lord knows, we need something to help us through.

I'll go back and delete all of my pictures that I can find.

I don't believe that's necessary, Shirley. We all enjoy the cartoons and can certainly use a laugh!

Actually, it only took a few minutes for me to delete those images. After we read them and enjoy them, we can go back and delete them. Maybe I'll do that about once a month. That might work.
Not to keep beating the same drum (but I'll do it anyway), just use a file hosting service. Those links consume minimal resources, as does linking pics from websites rather than uploading them from our drives, and the results are the same.
