Basically, you upload your pics to a free 3rd party service. Then you get a link to your pic and post it here just as you would any other pic from the internet. Linked pics are not stored here, so they take up minimal resources. I've gotten into the habit of doing it here.

Brief instructions here:
>Go to IMGUR.com
>Upload a photo from your drive exactly as you would to any other forum.
>Hover over the photo to display the Copy Link button and click on the three dots.
>Select Get Shared Links and click on the Copy Link by the BBCode (Forums)
>Paste that link directly into your Comment

Please don't overreact, however. I don't want to lose the things that are enjoyable here, only that we remain conscious about the things that we post, and if you can use text instead of an image to accomplish the same purpose, that would be better, or if you can link to the image on a hosting service, that will cost us nothing, or virtually nothing.

They reserve the right to remove stuff that has not had active views for "some period of time" and that is not associated with a User Account (free to sign up.) They did state their intention to get more aggressive with this starting in May 2023. I can't find any chatter about experiences with the new policy. I suspect they got rid of a ton of dead, legacy stuff.

Maybe I'll create an account, since I use it to host forum pics so much. I did that with Photobucket, and then they went to a pay model. It seems once these places reach a critical mass, they can't resist the urge to hold your stuff ransom (meaning we should all keep copies of important pics on our drives and not use these places as our sole repository.)
 
I know this horse has been beat to death already but, I am circling back to the topic of posting photos for a quick question.

Can you resize photos on the imaging host sites too? Or do I have to save the photos to my computer file, then go to my photo program to resize the photo, and then save it again to my file. THEN send it to the hosting site to get the code to post the photo in SOC forum?

Shoot, all this time I thought if I resized my photos it was fine. Those HUGE photos, I feel like I have to stand back 5 feet and have Orangutan arms to scroll up and down to see the whole picture. 😀

I would think that most of those sites have Resize functionality, but you might have to sign up to get it. I do not see a Resize feature on the IMGUR free page.

I use Infraview for my images. I like it because I can resize by percentages. So depending on how large the image is, I might want an output that's 50% the size of the original, 33%, 25%, etc. There are not preset resizes...just type in your desired %, and it resizes both width and height (and kb.)

It's free, and the guy has a way you can donate if you like his product. I have donated, for this and for a couple of other programs that I use regularly.

  • Effective thread titles identify what the thread is about.
  • Titles should not end with a trailing ellipses (...), as we all know that there will be more to come in the post.
  • Titles should not end in a period, and other punctuation marks should not be doubled, tripled, or so on.
  • The first post should describe what the OP intends that thread to be about.

Sometimes, yes. But I think most of the images people post are cartoons, jokes, or personal photos we want to share. Also, threads like "Good Morning" and the jokes/cartoon threads are usually just posts of pasted internet images one after another. It's hard to break old habits, but I have started using an image hosting site again though it is cumbersome to have all the extra steps instead of just cut/paste. I have no idea whether those images will disappear at some point because once they are "hosted" I have no control over them.

There doesn't seem to be a good answer for this, other than let us know how much the image storage costs and we'll try to pay for it. Also, many SOCers aren't even reading these "limit your image sharing" posts and are just going about business as usual, because that's how it has always been.
 
I wish to report a possible hacking of this site.

Several times this morning, checking out threads here on SOC 2.0, I have got a screen that says, "Oops, this site requires cookies. Do you accept cookies?"

I have yet to get a reply to my pre-acceptance question, "Thin Mint or Chocolate Chip?" :sneaky: I have a suspicion that the Girl Scouts are hacking this site but staying mum, due to self incrimination. 😜

That sometimes happened to me on the old SOC too. I would go and allow cookies to get in there and then un-allow them after my password or whatever was accepted.
 
The very best thing that anyone could do to bring this forum to life is to think of things to say and say them, whether it's coming up with new threads or replying to comments that others have made.

Well, Ken, when your signature is "As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly," some may take that personal and decide best to stay silent. :ROFLMAO: It certainly discourages one following up on a thread they started. Best to turn your head and scroll on. :sneaky:
