Hospice or Hospital

I think the answer for this might depend on where you live, or at least which state you are in. If you call the Florida council on aging for your area, they can probably direct you to a free attorney consultation to get the correct answers on what happens for either choice.
Medicare pays for hospital, and Hoot says they also pay for hospice; so to seems like there would be some coverage either way, and they might be able to put a lien on the property if Medicare didn’t cover the whole bill.
Talk with an attorney and ask these questions, so you know for sure.

Medicare and your secondary should pay for all your hospital bills, minus the deductible. It is federal Medicare law that any medical provider has to tell you before service is rendered if your Medicare and secondary doesn't cover part of your care.

All Medicare providers have to accept Medicare's write offs and so do the secondaries, in your case United. They cannot make you pay the part that Medicare reduces their billing. Be sure all your providers are Medicare approved. If not, find another one that is. Some specialist don't accept Medicare, always ask and read the paper your sign about patient responsibility. If a Medicare provider tries to bill you extra, report them to Medicare. There are severe penalties for this illegal billing.

You should owe nothing unless you go over the lifetime max which I seriously doubt you will even come close. Always ask any provider if they are going to bill for something not covered by Medicare. I have known several old couples faced with maxing out Medicare that divorce, giving the one that will survive everything and showing the sick one as a mercy boarder. Medicare can't do anything if the divorce is legal.

I hear Hopice i free, is this true?
I also hear hospital can take your home for hospital bill.Leaving Jake without our house.

Marie, as others have said, Medicare covers hospice care.

The medical bills issue is more complicated and differs from state to state, so Yvonne's recommendation to contact the Florida Council on Aging is good advice. You can also google Florida-specific laws on medical bills. Typically a homestead is not subject to medical liens but that varies by state.

With a terminal dx, hospice is the best route since you can still go to the hospital, but only if they approve. The only thing is if you decide you want treatment for the cancer, then that will be denied by Medicare. Since your doctors have said it is terminal, then I see you have no choice but to go in hospice and whether you stay at home or go into a facility, is your decision. You are now ready for hospice and they can answer all questions you have. The only thing any doctor or hospital can charge you for, is treatment for the cancer, IE chemo, radiation, surgery, etc.

While the hospital cannot take your home, they could force Jake into medical bankruptcy and leave him in a real mess, if you decide now you want cancer treatment. Hospice is a great thing and designed to help you stay out of pain and be more comfortable than what a hospital stay offers. They offer all kind of services that you will find a comfort.

Hospice isn't free, but it will be fully covered by your Medicare and secondary. They cannot bill you for anything Medicare doesn't approve and pay for. You are already paying with your monthly premiums, so take advantage of it.

We have a assisted living type of place 5 minutes or so from the housee, Jake can be here with our dogs ,hens and tractor,;)and I can be off this dirt road and isolation that gives me horrible panic attcks in the evening.
I tried to enter it a few months ago but Jake and my daughter didn't want it.

I will be sharing a large room with a nice ladt I met today. I think I'll join tomorrow. Jakw can visit and I can leave anytime to go places ,some of the residents even have cars and can leave when they want.

Is that assisted living within hospice?

I wonder about the payment responsibility.
This is an important point since Medicare does not pay for assisted living.
Jake pok with the suprvisor there this morning and she is looking into the cost.
Our part was going to be about $1000,00 month. She said she thinks they can lower that price.
Not sure what i want, mind changes oiften now.

I know it's a difficult time for you and Jake, Marie. I wish I could wave my magic wand and make all this go away for you. I know you must be nervous and anxious over every decision you have to make, and there are so many things to consider. Bless your hearts; I hate that you both have to go through this.

I know you care Beth as do others here and you are helping just being here, yet I don't want to make anyone feel bad, it's just another part of life that isn't fun.

Goodness that’s allot of money , of course I’ve got no idea what it would cost in Australia , however when I went to visit my dying half sister in Hospice in Adelaide 20 years ago her cost was her pension / welfare benefits which was about $500+ a fortnight back then

She didn’t have a cent so I guess it was the only option of getting some money for her keep so to speak

Sending a gentle hug @Marie Mallory
