That's What She Said

My eye surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning at 7 a.m. We decided to make a dry run to the surgical outpatient facility this morning to make sure we can find the place in rush hour on Thursday. I get really nervous when in a lot of traffic and going someplace I haven't been before. So we took one "back roads" route and decided sticking to the freeway will be our best bet. It's about 45 minutes away if traffic is moving but that is difficult to predict around here.

The facility is close to the Johnson Space Center and NASA, so there's a lot of fast moving traffic and impatient drivers. Anyway, we got our route planned then stopped for donuts on our way back home.

I am really dreading the eye surgery and hope I'm doing the right thing. I kind of have a bad feeling about this and can't really say why. Probably just pure dread and a bit of fear.
Good luck on the surgery @Beth Gallagher! Eye surgery is always scary, but sometimes the fear of it is worse than the actual operation.

Looks like the little vacuum cleaner they use to remove bad floaters. Just think past the procedure if you can.
Yep; that's called a "vitrectomy". They remove the fluid and replace it with saline solution, and sometimes a gas bubble to hold the retina in place while healing. I'm not sure how much of that he's going to do in my eye since I didn't know enough to ask a lot of questions. I guess it really doesn't matter but I am really not looking forward to this.

Thanks, Lois. I am very apprehensive and dreading this. However there are two things I really don't want to lose... my mind and my eyesight!
Can they maybe give you a sedative first ? I hope they would just put you out for the operation, but if not, definitely a sedative would be in order. I would be terrified of this, too.
I had an eye operation many years ago, and they put me completely out for it.

I hope they will give me a sedative, Yvonne. I will certainly inquire about it, haha. I don't know if I'll be put completely under or if it will be the "twilight" sleep like for a colonoscopy. I have read on other forums that people have had both types of anesthesia for this procedure. Most report that the surgery was not nearly as bad as they expected, which helps my anxiety a little.

My eye is feeling a little better today, though the bubble floating around in there is giving me fits. It turned out that the anesthesia I had was the twilight sleep and it made me really sick to my stomach for 2 whole days. I'm finally feeling better from that, though.

I thought I'd share what my doctor told me when I went for the post-op checkup. I asked how the surgery went and how my eye looked when he operated. He said, "well, the surgery went well but it was delayed for a bit. You kept telling us you were hot and nauseated, and kicking the blankets off."

Thankfully I don't remember any of that but I don't doubt that I acted badly. I don't like being hot and they had me wrapped like a cocoon so I couldn't move my arms during the procedure. He said they had to unwrap me so I would settle down. 😬

We are doing some cleaning today in preparation for Christmas company. Making sure the dust bunnies are corralled and the bathrooms are presentable. I'm taking a break and having some coffee. My husband gave the yard crew the rest of the year off so he is outside blowing leaves off the driveway.

I feel kind of left out because he's going to pick up his new glasses in a little while. Since I've been having eye issues for the past several months I was not able to get my eye exam or new spectacles. 🤓 ☹️ It will be a couple of months till my eye is fully healed and my vision has leveled out enough to order glasses.

Christmas Eve! Makes me feel sentimental and a little sad remembering all the Christmases past. Today is my parents' anniversary though they are both long dead; I can't believe I haven't heard their voices in many years. (Mama 1991; Daddy 1996)

In 3 hours we will be knee-deep in kids and grandkids. Thankfully we are having the party catered so all I have to do is put out a stack of plates and a few relish dishes. It will be fun having a noisy houseful of rowdy youngun's for a few hours. I'm not sure if anyone is staying overnight but I have bedrooms ready if they do.

@Ken Anderson has given us a wonderful Christmas gift...having the forum back again. I missed all of the SOC gang and it's so nice to hear your 'voices' again. Merry Christmas to you all, and to your families. I hope we all get many more Christmases, and more years of sharing our lives.

Merry Christmas to you , @Beth Gallagher , and it is wonderful that you have your family to enjoy the holidays with. I always miss my mom and dad, too, and they have been gone since 1988; but it is hard to have Christmas without remembering how it was when i was growing up, and when my kids were growing up and we went there for some of the holidays.
I agree, it is awesome having the forum back again. No place is like this place !

Well, it's a quiet Christmas evening. We had a very loud and fun gathering last night; our kids, grandkids, my husband's sister and her husband. The food was excellent and everyone seemed to have fun. The adults played card games after dinner and gift opening, and the grandkids popped fireworks . Party broke up around 1 a.m.

Our oldest daughter stayed the night, and all of them have gone over to their "other mom's" house today so it's just my husband and me. I talked to my son in Oregon and then we had dinner. Now husband's watching TV and I'm kicking back.

The air bubble in my eye has finally dissipated. The eye is feeling OK but vision is still a little blurry. I see the eye doctor on Monday.

All traces of Christmas have been removed from the premises! Back to "just another day" mode and getting ready for New Years. Can anyone believe it's practically 2026?? Wow.

I had so much Mexican food left over from Christmas Eve that I was able to put enough fajitas, refried beans, and spanish rice in the freezer for at least 2 more meals for the 2 of us. I also have a bunch of guacamole and pico de gallo but I don't believe that stuff will freeze well. I'm thinking I'll make a pot of taco soup in a day or so and put all the leftover pico into that.

We had a really nice Christmas this year and I hope you all did, too.

Today I had my eye checkup with the surgeon. He said everything looks great and is healing well. The vision in that eye is still a bit blurry but it's going to take time to heal. He said my cataracts are still small and shouldn't be a problem for a while. Of course that is impossible to predict. I want to get new glasses but there's really no point if I'll be having cataract surgery in a few months.

We are having a cold day today; a front blew in last night and really brought the temps down. Also had a lot of high wind but that has calmed down. It will be in the 30's tonight and then warming back up. Typical Texas weather!

My husband's sister got a new iPad for Christmas and he has gone over to her house to help her get it set up. I don't expect to see him for several days because to say his sister is "not techincally inclined" is putting it mildly. :ROFLMAO: I don't believe she has an Apple ID so this should be interesting. Luckily he is much more patient than me, haha. I wished him luck when he left.

It is usually pretty easy to set up an iPad for someone , even when they have no experience, as long as the person helping knows what they are doing.
I have even done it remotely, with us being on a phone.

I think when I first started helping Ina, she was on her ancient computer and we were emailing back and forth at first, and then graduated to the phone conversations.
Even after she had it set up and was using it, she i-messaged me when she had questions, so we could work out things that way.

Your Sister-in-law will love the iPad once she gets used to it ! What model did she get ?
