That's What She Said

Just kicking off the diary section. Y'all remember how I like to blather on about nothing. When I can see better I will bore y'all to distraction. As the Great One* used to say on Saturday nights... "And away we go!"

I am not inclined to doing a journal or diary, as I really don't like talking about myself. I could bore you all to death with my long life's accomplishments, joys, disappointments, achievements
, ailments, etc., but that's not me.

Sometimes, someone will post something that pertains to my experiences, and I'll relate that, but I won't be able to honestly say I'll put you to sleep with any of my posts.

This, is in no way a criticism of all here who enjoy doing a diary or journal, as I do love reading them all. Gives me great insight as to who you all are which is nice.

A few months ago my husband had a dentist appointment late in the day. When he came out of the dentist's office, the parking lot was mostly empty but some 'kind' stranger left him this gift.

Damage was $6,000 but we "only" had to pay $1,000 deductible. Thanks, Parking Lot Loser, I hope karma pays you a visit.

That would make me so mad! Do yo think that there might be any security cameras in the area that you might be able to check?

Beth, that's a lot of money for what looks like minor damage. I need to be in the car repair business.

I hit a deer a couple of years ago. It looked to me like just my fender was damaged. It cost $4000 to get it fixed. They replaced both benders, the bumper and the hood. I wondered if there was a ripoff. But I have $100 deductible, so I didn't ask any questions.

Prices of things are out of control. Apparently there is some kind of electronic sensor or camera or something in that bumper area. We were just glad that the tailgate wasn't damaged because those are ridiculous to replace.

I like talking about me, lol.

As some of you who read the Preserving Food thread know, I've been shopping for a small-ish pressure canner to play with. I still love kitchen toys but I'm too old to be trying to lift a 23 quart canner full of hot water so I want something manageable. Plus there are only 2 of us and I'm not gardening anymore, so not a lot of food to be canned. I ordered the Presto stove top canner in the 16 qt size and before I opened the box I started obsessing over the electronic canners that are available now. 🤡

I have watched many videos by a woman on youtube (RoseRed Homestead); she is a PhD professor and though she has no background in food handling/canning she has done many experiments with canners. She uses scientific data methods and a small data-logging instrument that actually goes into a jar of food to gather time/temperature readings during the canning process. She has focused on the three most popular electronic canners (Presto, Instant Pot Canner, and Nesco). If anyone is considering one of those brands I highly recommend her videos; they are a wealth of information about food safety and canning.

After watching all of her testing videos (more than once), I decided to order the Nesco canner and I got it today. I was planning to return the stovetop canner and went to Amazon to get a return label. A banner popped up and asked if they gave me a $40 refund on the item if I would keep it! I have never had anything like that happen before.

I had purchased the canner on a Black Friday sale so with the additional $40 off it was too good to pass up, so I'm keeping it. I'm going to try out both the canners and will probably end up giving one of them to my DIL, who also loves putting up food. So for the time being I have 2 canners and more clutter for the garage.

A few months ago the company my son worked for had a RIF (reduction in force) and most of his department was let go. Unfortunately the layoff included my son, his boss, and many others in their department. The layoff was out of the blue and my son was blind-sided by the loss of his job, which he thought was secure. He had recently gotten a promotion and was really hit hard by being suddenly unemployed.

He was able to draw unemployment and after about 5 months he found a new job, much to everyone's relief. He had interviewed with one of Elon Musk's facilities but did not get that job, which was a disappointment. His new job pays more than the one he lost, but he no longer has a company truck to drive.

He lives near Bastrop TX but had training courses in Houston. He came and stayed with us for a week; he was receiving pay plus "per diem" to cover his travel expenses, hotel, etc. He was able to pocket the expense money by staying in his old room at mom's. It was actually quite nice having him in the house for a while, and we hated to see him return home and leave it quiet here again.

We just got home from my son's house; our first Christmas get-together. We decided to have it this weekend because of my eye surgery next week, though it is a little early. It's a 3-hour drive to his place so we were in the car for 6 hours today; I'm exhausted. We had to cross Houston in the Saturday Christmas shopping bumper-to-bumper traffic which was horrible. It was nice weather and a really good time once we got there, though.

My son grilled beef and chicken fajitas, and his wife made all the fixin's. My 2 granddaughters, grandson, and 2 of their significant others were there. My oldest granddaughter and grandson both got engaged this year so we are adding to the family. They also have 3 small "ankle-biter" size dogs who were full of energy and enjoying the party.

I got the most beautiful and unusual tropical plant from my son. I will take a picture of it tomorrow and see if anyone has seen one like it.

My oldest grandson went to work for Tesla when he finished college last year. Today he announced his second promotion and I'm very proud of him. I actually have three grands working for Tesla and SpaceX... two grandsons and my granddaughter's fiance.

So. One Christmas gathering down and one to go! At least Christmas Eve will be here so no traveling for that one.

Brrrrrr! We had our first taste of winter last night; it got down to around freezing and has been cold all day.

My husband's truck has not been working right; the little actuator doors that direct air/heat to the dash, defroster, etc. were not switching. He called the Ford dealer and they sent a guy out here to take the truck to fix it. They have pick up and delivery service when vehicles need repair which is actually quite handy, plus it's still under warranty so no cost for repair. They have already fixed it and brought it back home!

My eye surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning at 7 a.m. We decided to make a dry run to the surgical outpatient facility this morning to make sure we can find the place in rush hour on Thursday. I get really nervous when in a lot of traffic and going someplace I haven't been before. So we took one "back roads" route and decided sticking to the freeway will be our best bet. It's about 45 minutes away if traffic is moving but that is difficult to predict around here.

The facility is close to the Johnson Space Center and NASA, so there's a lot of fast moving traffic and impatient drivers. Anyway, we got our route planned then stopped for donuts on our way back home.

I am really dreading the eye surgery and hope I'm doing the right thing. I kind of have a bad feeling about this and can't really say why. Probably just pure dread and a bit of fear.
