Somehow I don't think it will be a forceful takeover since we already have mothballed bases there and the ability by treaty to build more. If Denmark wants to pay for healthcare and education, why should we care? I think that we should allow the Danes to spend as much money there as they want. They are not interested in extracting minerals or bases themselves. Some believe that Trump is actually trying to get NATO and the UN to disband and relieve the U.S. from the financial burdens. Trump has begun forming an organization to replace the UN. Putin says Russia in interested in the idea, while France is not. Trump, when speaking of France's refusal to explore the idea is quoted as saying, 'Well, nobody wants them there any way...."
If the US successfully takes Greenland, I'm fairly confident that Denmark would not continue to pay for their healthcare and education. I don't even know how those things are handled in "US Territories" that are not states.
I think he usually has ulterior motives when he does such things. I think his Canada stuff resulted in the ongoing movement for Alberta to leave Canada. Trump wanted the Alberta fossil fuels to reach market, which Ottawa was blocking. He taunted the Canadians, especially targeting the Alberta and Saskatchewan areas, letting them know he was there to help. The Carney government will do ANYTHING to prevent Alberta from leaving the "confederation" as it finances much of Canada's social welfare system. Trump will get his way no matter what happens.
He also uses it as strategy, going to the extremes verbally while intending to settle for less, which would be far more than he had gotten if he hadn't begun negotiations from an extreme. I was active in our labor union when I worked for a paper company, and we had to go into a contract negotiation asked for a bunch of crazy stuff we knew were weren't going to get, while the company went into the negotiations threatening to cut salaries and benefits, which they had no intentions of doing.
Don't forget that a lot of older Dad's are getting "Portly" (God knows I am, I'm over 250 pounds now), so they might need to add more dogs to the sleds and they will need more than two...
It is a bit silly to see "Imperial Europe" that conquered much of the world militarily having a hissy fit over the U.S. considering occupying Greenland. As has been said above, I suspect this is all part of a strategy connected to many other things. Listen to the Secretary of the Treasury. He is the cabinet member I moat respect and I believe he is quite competent. He says if everyone stays calm, the result will be great, but if things escalate, those doing it will come out looking silly.
