So I just got an email saying that because I get CalFresh (aka, Food Stamps) I can get a free I-phone 11. Can anyone give me the skinny on those phones? Would it be hard for PC guy to learn how to use?

I was just looking through some of the stuff Cindy bought but never opened. What is a Pressure Cooker good for?

I love my iPhone, and I am sure that you would not have any problem at all learning to use it, since you are very computer literate, @Axel Slingerland . That is an older model, but still a great phone and an excellent camera.
Look on YouTube at the apple channel and it will tell you all about the phone.
Plus, if you have an iPhone, you can get an Apple Watch to help monitor your health and be an emergency calling device is you need help, or you fall and pass out.
You should definitely look into getting the phone ! (Just my opinion, of course)

This is a long video, but you can skim through it, and it will tell you everything about the iPhone 11.

I switched to iPhones maybe 5 years or so ago. I read a bunch of articles and watched videos because I was concerned the technology would be too foreign to me. It's not that different.

Regarding your other question: A pressure cooker is great for cooking things like short ribs of beef and ham hocks. They fall off the bone, and yield a great base for gravy. Pressure cookers cook food pretty quickly. It's not an every day appliance for me, but they work well.

I quit buying Lottery Tickets years ago... :ROFLMAO:

Well, actually it was your opinion I wanted. I know I could have sent you a PM, but I figured this way other people might benefit for my questions.

There ain't nothing wrong with long videos.

Thanks, Yvonne!

Re: the “I quit buying lottery tickets”. ( I don’t buy them either.)
But here is what I have found about buying apple products. The people who love Apple devices want to always have the newest version that comes out, for the most part.
At least both of my kids are that way. (So, yes, I am lucky and right there for the hand-me-downs, there is that)

This means that there are always a lot of used apple devices on the market, and they work perfectly well, for a fraction of the price of a new one.
Like Beth mentioned, she still has her Apple Watch Series 6. Those came out in 2020, and now sell for right around $100, much less than a new one, on Amazon, and probably less on eBay.
Bobby still has his old 13” iPads, one from 2015 and one from 2017, and both work fine, although they need to be charged up sooner than the new ones do.
This is maybe comparable to buying an older model Cadillac as opposed to a new Ford Fiesta, even old, the comfort and durability is there.

And at our age, I believe that tracking our health is important. An Apple Watch is much more versatile and helpful than one of those safety medallions that they sell to seniors.
It can work anywhere, and can call 911 even if you fell and passed out and can’t call yourself, if you get one with the fall-detection, which are most of them.
A series 6 should have that and also check your oxygen, even when you are sleeping.

I have said before, I would probably be dead about 10 years ago if my Apple Watch had not been tracking my heart rate and telling me that it was falling down into the 30’s when I was sleeping. It just kept getting slower and slower, but I would never have known , and would have probably just died when it finally went too low at night.
So, yes, I am a big believer of Apple Watch .
(This is probably more of my opinion than you wanted, @Axel Slingerland, but it is something I believe in a lot.)

Well, so much for that idea. I tried to sign up but when I got to the website, there was no iphone 11 option listed. They were offering a Samsung Galaxy. Everyone I know who's ever had one has had the same advice, "Don't get one. They're junk." So then this morning I got an email from them and I thought I would try the link. Avast blocked it saying the linked website was infected with several viruses. There were two phone numbers in the email, the non 800 one traced back to Jennifer Lewis, St. Clair Shores, MI, marked as spam, and an unregistered 855 number that came up with a scam warning. So no deal...

I don’t know what the deal was with the email that you got, but I am looking online, and it does look to me like you CAN get an iPhone if you are low income and have SNAP, or the California equivalent, @Axel Slingerland .
They have been giving out those free phones ever since Obama, and they were usually called “Obama phones” as a nickname; but now it looks like you can get a good quality phone free and they come with a usage plan. I think that some of them are unlimited text and talk.
Since my daughter takes care of my phone, I have never looked into this for a phone.

However, they do also have low income internet , and you just have to see what the providers in your area offer for that. Each provider can make a different offer, as long as they have some kind of a program for low income people.
I had AT&T WiFi before, which was about $10 a month, but then google came through with the fiber optic here and I changed over to that. With their neighborhood plan it is $20 a month, but still really affordable.

That's what this was about. The link was on California's Cal-Fresh / SNAP website. However just because that one was a scam doesn't mean they all are. ☺️

Calling those phones “Obama phones” is incorrect, he actually had little to do with the program's creation, though he did expand it like President George W. Bush had done. If people had named them after the Presidents that signed the laws, it would have been Reagan Bush Obama phones. They are more accurately known by some people as Lifeline phones.

However, something I call the Presidential Credit Game happens with every new President. If a previous President does something that people don't like that will become law years later, the current President at the time will get blamed for it. And when something that people like that was created by a previous President becomes law, the current President will get credit for it. This has happened with every President that I know of. And Obama is no exception. He got the credit that was due to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

However, they do also have low income internet , and you just have to see what the providers in your area offer for that. Each provider can make a different offer, as long as they have some kind of a program for low income people.
The Affordable Connectivity Program was created in November, 2021 by President Biden. Congress let the funding for it lapse in 2024, effectively killing the program. The only low income internet that I know of that remains is Lifeline phones.

I had AT&T Internet for 20 years in Eureka. When I first got it, it was 3 Gbps. Many years later it was upgraded to 6 Gbps. When I got high speed Internet in 2022 from SuddenLink it was supposedly 1,000 Gbps. But in Eureka, isolated on the northern California coast, even that was slow. The 100 Gbps I get from Spectrum now is actually faster and does not cost $140 a month.

No. The extra light oil doesn't taste strong, or like olives to my taste buds. The extra virgin olive oil has a stronger taste to it. It is much greener in looks. The extra virgin is supposed to be healthier.
Exactly. I'm trying to find healthier alternatives now. I figure since food prices are increasing I might as well spend the extra money on buying healthier foods. What I paid for $5 has increased to $7 so I just can buy the healthier product for $7.

What is the best virgin olive oil to buy?
The Kirkland Extra Virgin Olive Oil that Costco sells (when it is available) that is in a dark green square bottle imported from Italy is the best bang for your buck for EVOO. But when they have it, it won't $7... It was $13 in 2022, the last time we bought any. I don't care for most EVOO because tastes awful, but this has no funky taste. My wife Cindy used it in place of butter quite often. I saw her making grilled cheese sandwiches with it one day and told her I didn't like it. She said "You don't? You been eating it for years."
