What Are You Doing Today?

I stayed out of my county tractor supply all last week because the Tennessee walking horse national celebration was on. That is the culmination of a season’s worth of showing and annually draws a couple thousand people with their horses, their big duallys, and their lavish living quarter horse trailers to town.

My county’s tractor supply has a very small parking lot that should never have been allowed, and it rolls downhill out onto the main highway. I’m sure you all get the picture. There have been buggies that have lost contact with their human and rolled out onto the street. I did not want to be any part of that parking lot hub bub last week so I let my Feed rundown.

That means today I came home with nearly all of it. 250 pounds of horse feed, a large bag of TOTW for the dogs, a couple quarts of oil for the Saturn, a 4-way hose splitter for my outdoor spigot so I can hook up three water hoses.

The tractor supply in the next county over has the calf manna I need for my elderly fella. It tisses me off that I couldn’t get everything at once today. I will have to go to the other TSC in the next couple of days and buy them out of their calf Manna which is (3) 50 pound bags. 3 bags will last me several months I case I need to find a new supplier.

Why on earth would I need a 4- way water hose splitter. Because I have rented the far west 9-1/2 acre pasture to the lady who owns the Arabian that has been my Dutch Warmblood’s companion for two years. She, the other border, and the renters in both farm houses were told they all had less than four weeks to get out. She had been there five years, the others around 14 years.

they were all on a 63 acre farm/ex-horse training facility. Ethics and honesty goes out the window when a boatload money is involved. Developments are going in on both sides of this farm, so people had to uproot their lives “yesterday “ for what they think is a development. I know it’s not a data center because my county has already put a moratorium on them.

Anyway, she had nowhere affordable within a decent driving distance to move her other two — A Mustang she got out of a bad & very ignorant situation and the cutest cheek-pinching white donkey she got out of a different bad situation.

There is no water over there, so we ran 300 feet of 1” water hose from my barn, down the hill to a 150 gallon tub for her two. It’s in full shade so stays very cool. It’s a great pasture as an addition, but difficult as a stand-alone. Still have a few things to work out before the ice flies, which we will somehow.

No, they can’t come over here because she would then have to pay full board, plus I don’t have the barn space anymore.

I brought lunch home from Captain D’s (I LOVE their Cole slaw) and will be a beached whale until it’s time to feed my horses their supper.

#1: Every time I read detailed posts regarding owning, transporting and showing horses, I hear cash registers ringing in the background. Back in the 60s my sister worked at a jewelry store owned by a couple who were "Old Money" in Middleburg VA, which was (is?) the heart of horse country in that part of the state. They had horses. I know they had hurdles set up for the horses at their second farm not far from where I lived, but I don't know if they did fox hunts and other stuff as well.

#2: I'm jealous you have a Captain D's nearby. The nearest one to me is about an hour away. The only one I've eaten at in northern Virginia (Manassas) is no longer there. Probably became unsafe.

lol boy do I get it about “old money”, lol.

I was raised in NE Ohio. The still very active Chagrin Valley Hunt Club in Gates Mills, OH, was formed in 1909 with “old money”. My earliest memories were always of “them” turning up their noses at the “new money people” moving into their territory and bringing their horses with them .

My brother still has our paternal grandparents farm about 30 minutes from Chagrin Falls. He is a plumber by trade so travels between the two counties a lot. He said “the old money VS. the new money” is alive and well to this day😂😂. Most of those old timers have passed on, but the younger generations are willing to continue those old arguments.

Except for a little bit of gaming in my youth, I was always a die hard trail rider in my heart. All that monetary bickering in the horse show world put the final stamp on keeping me ever on the hunt for Bigfoot and the Marlboro Man in the wilderness and out of the show ring.🤠🤠

The best privilege is the inherited kind. Generational aloofness, as it were...and being in one of the original colonies, some roots are centuries deep.

There's a local diner I eat at every so often, and someone drops off the quarterly paper about fox hunting. I like to read while I eat so always grab one. It's quite fascinating to read about the lineage in horses, dogs and humans. There is a fox hunt club in an old money district (Keswick) that overlaps my county and the county that Charlottesville is in (another old money/new money "city.") When I was still working, I would encounter hunt clubs crossing the back gravel roads I would take on my commute.

I will say that new money tends to not wear it well...there's no patina to it.

?? There are about 6 of them scattered around the Houston area.
Interesting. Houston is not listed on their website. I wonder if there in one closer to me than an hour. They don't have a zip code lookup...just a list of cities within each state. Maybe the Houston ones are by neighborhoods I don't recognize. Richmond VA has 6.
