What Are You Doing Today?

I rely on StillTasty.com as my shelf-life reference guide. I was surprised that capers expired at all. I figured anything in brine was pretty much preserved forever.

I need to figure out how long the smoked salmon is good for. The date on the package is the Packed Date (yesterday.) At least, I assume it is. All the dates on the 3 types of packaged salmon had just passed, and none said "Use By." None said "Packed On" either.

I get it vacuum packed. Very expensive but lasts a good amount of time considering I can eat the whole thing as soon as I open it.

Well today I finally settled on a new barn cat. The owner was moving in a trailer down to Kentucky. He is neutered and not declawed but can use a litter box which is good for the time he needs to be inside to get comfortable here. He will stay in our barnhouse for a while and then move to the chicken tractor in the barn after I am done using it for the new chickens.
He is a tan-ish red and shy, just now. Supposedly he scratches furniture but there is nothing that will be missed if he does in there.
His name is Mr Kitty.

Speaking of capers, we use them a lot here in our cooking. I keep forgetting to ask for a pickle with my sandwiches too as I do love them. Years ago there were served automatically.

Another pickled delicacy I cannot find anymore is lamb's tongue. They were delicious and when I got older, we'd be able to get them with a beer in a bar near our college.

Pickled lamb’s tongue is available on line. Some NY delis sell it.

Since it wasn’t windy this morning, we started to wash the vinyl deck and part of the house. We still have 3 buildings in the back yard we have to wash that are vinyl sided also. We have to wait until it isn’t windy, so the cleaning solution doesn’t blow back in our face. The house and deck looks nice and clean again. We will repeat it again in the Fall.

Interesting. I've had cow's tongue growing up, mainly in sandwiches, and have only seen it once in my adult life (at a Bolivian buffet.) I have never heard of having lamb's tongue, much less pickled.

You get cows tongue in deli salads or as meat in most German butcher shops. Also in the more northern US states.

There are 3 things I miss about living in a more urban area:
-Good restaurants
-Ethnic markets
-Museums

I was fortunate to have spent over 40 years of my life outside of DC, during a time when those things existed but before the hoards moved in. Lots of huge ethnic supermarkets. Great restaurants. Book lectures and fossil hunting trips with the Smithsonian less than 10 miles from home. I enjoyed many years in the Sweet Spot. But now you couldn't pay me to go back.
