What Are You Doing Today?

For starters today, I am making my husband’s carrot cake for his birthday that is next week, since he claims the power may go out with the severe weather we are supposed to have Sunday night. I told him he should be having a pie since it is PI day. 🥧 😁 He said he will take a pie too. I am off to the kitchen to shred some carrots and to make a cake.🥕🥕🥕🥕

Sometimes we set ourselves to walk right into "I shouldn't have said anything."

I love carrot cake, but I get a big slice of multiple layer for $5 at the bakery. I admire you for making one. Don't keep us hanging, is hubs getting a pie also?

My husband's birthday is the 17th. I'm off the hook cake-wise this year because our daughter is sending a box of "designer cupcakes" delivered from a local foo-foo bakery. I will probably make him a banana pudding on his birthday because it's his favorite.

We are still working in the yard today. It is the perfect day outside and we're getting a lot done. Almost done with mulching the front beds and transplanting some stuff in the back. Seems like the entire neighborhood is outside today; everyone yelling "come do mine when you're finished" and laughing like it's a new joke.

Yesterday a big goofy dog lumbered up to us, panting and wanting to visit. I have no idea whose dog he is but he had a collar on. He looked to be a pit bull or at least a mix; he is a BIG dog. I got him a pan of water and he decided to stay with us, so he tagged along while we worked. I haven't seen him today so hopefully he found his way home before I had to put up "IS THIS YOUR DOG?" signs.

I'm tossing a chicken in the oven to roast and have some leftover dressing in the freezer so supper will be easy. Guess I need to get back outside now...

Not a good day. My lady friend, whose mental state is declining, informed me this morning that some morning I was going to wake up with her gun in my mouth and she was going to blow my brains out. She does have a small 22 caliber revolver that she keeps hidden, so I decided it was time to remove it from her. Took a couple of minutes, but found it and put in a secure storage space in my vehicle, which is always locked. She then went out to the garage to hunt for it, and ended up hitting me with her fists. I called 9-1-1 at that point. About 6 of our city's finest showed up very quickly. I gave them the weapon, and it is now in their position. Of course, she had some wild story to tell them. An hour or two later, she called 9-1-1 because I was looking for the little box of shells that went with the 22. 3 or 4 officers showed up, and listened to her. In both instances, all of the LEOs were polite and professional. I was impressed. Not sure what happens next. I had started the legal process to have her removed from my house and put into a care facility, but that takes a month. What a blankety blank mess.

Sorry, but just needed to vent.

I so sorry, Hoot. What a terrible day for you. The situation seems scary, sad, and the circumstances just all around sucks!

My thoughts exactly ! This sounds like a dangerous situation, and something needs to change before someone does get hurt. You can’t live with someone who is attacking you, and threatening to kill you when you are sleeping.
Does she have any family who can help get her moved to a facility where she can be taken care of and get help ?

Thanks everyone for your concern. She has a son back in Ohio, and in 2024 we tried having her live with him. Lasted 2 weeks, and now he will not answer any calls from her or from me. At this point she isn't much of a threat, but she is a drain on my patience. We have been together for over 8 years, and she has always needed a lot of physical support - meal prep, laundry, etc - and the last few years have seen a slow but steady mental decline. You can talk to her and have a perfectly fine conversation, but the tell-tale signs are there - paranoia, lack of self awareness, etc. I don't think there is much I can do to speed up the legal process

Just curious Don - do Alaskans still get an annual stipend?
We do, but not the legally mandated amount. A governor back in the 1970s started the system because Alaska was flush with cash then and he said that politicians will spend everything they can get their hands on. He sequestered a part of the oil profits and eventually decided to provide a part of the income from the money, not the money itself but the earnings from that fund according to a formula. A recent governor--the one who tried to sell Alaska to China--took the idea to the State Supreme Court, and the court decided the politicians could spend the money allocated to the people. We still get a little bit each year, but it is at the discretion of the politicians and not according to the legal formula.

Spent mid morning to afternoon with my middle son working on my Jeep. He bought a new battery and installed it then had to return it because the wires were not long enough to reach the posts. The Jeep didn't start with the second battery. So that's one possibility down and two to go (starter and alternator). My son contacted a friend who had worked on car repair in the past and explained what was going on and he was pretty sure of the starter being the problem. I was going to have it towed but my son said that Kevin wanted to help to save on the cost. Of course I had to question his ability which is how I found out that Kevin had worked at a car dealership as a mechanic and my son said that he has come through for him every time with no problems. The part has been ordered and estimated delivery date is Thursday.

I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles, Hoot. It seems like so many things just get beyond our control as we age. I'm wondering if the police could have her taken to a hospital or mental health facility for evaluation? Maybe they could keep her for a few weeks (or at least several days) to give you a break.
