But there IS a law that the I-9 form must be used with a 5K per employee fine if it is not filled out. Unfortunately, although technically, a Social Security card is not a form of I.D. it is however one of the 2 parameters needed to fill out the I-9 and Social Security cards are easy to get and multiple users can get away with using just one for a lengthy period of time. The Huntsville, Al. area was raided a few years ago and several restaurants and construction company’s felt the weight of the law and some of the consequences of hiring illegals. The largest consequence was that some restaurants, particularly the Latino ones, closed down for a period because they didn’t have enough legal employees to handle the business. Now, I will agree that the major lobby groups including those representing Ag and a couple of other groups have a lot to do with the debacle. But fellowed with that are those politicians who make a ton of money off those lobbyists and a ton of votes for hampering the I-9 process. I can’t remember the name right off the top of my head but during the time when Utah built the Olympic Village, the governor was broadcast live having a ceremony with the then Mexican President giving kudos to the Latinos responsible for helping to build the village because in his words, the whole event would not have been possible without the Latinos. That’s all good except for the fact that a hush job was enacted when the question came up about the illegals and I-9’s.
