So very glad

Good morning to all-

So, I went to the local community center yesterday- that would be the Wal-Mart in town, don't you know- and I see that the first Back to School stuff- notebooks, backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons and so on- are on prominent display.

I have been retired for quite a while, but I still got the catch in the throat and stiff in the back feeling. I always felt cold when I realized that summer was ending and school was starting up. Now, don't get me wrong, I treasured my time in the classroom as a teacher- I did that for almost forty years- but going back to school was tough- mainly because of the dreadful inservices we teachers had to endure at the start of school.

But it was nice to be able to collect myself and walk on past the Back to School display. I got cat food, Kitty litter, and some beer- but no pens or pencils or notebooks.

How did you all feel about Back to School?

you all be safe and keep well- Ed

Back to school was bittersweet. Summer was over but it was good to see your friends.

Were you going to get the new young nice teacher or Mrs. Crabapple, who had been there so long she had taught George Washington and was rumored to eat unruly kids for breakfast?

Would you get to sit next to your best friend? Would you trip in your new shoes that your mother bought half a size too big so you could "grow into them"?

How hard was long division going to be? Were you going to have to read out loud and, if so, would you stutter this year?

Was that cute boy going to be in your class or did he move away?

Would the other kids laugh at your Micky Mouse lunchbox?

Back to school turns the access roads into soccer mom suv bumper car speedway races. Traffic laws and red lights do not apply. Police cruisers park well hidden and wait it out. Throw in a couple of school bus drivers with NASCAR ambitions. I tailed one the other day doing 46 in a 35 with apparently broken blinkers.

Back to school was just something we did as kids, Like going to work as adults.
When my kids were young, Walmart was the place to go for great deals on notebooks especially, pens, paper etc. I home schooled for a while till I was guilted out of it, depriving my daughter of socialization which she hated. It took only maybe two hours to finish each day when traditional school took five and then bus rides to and from school.

As a student, I dreaded it, although once it started, I kind of liked school. As a teacher, I taught adults (EMT and Paramedic courses), so we went year-round. I taught classes (not the same classes) from 8 am to 10 pm, with an hour driving from one campus to another, and we had Saturday skills classes from 8 am to 10 pm, so if I wanted anything other than Sunday off, I had to arrange for someone to cover my classes. I enjoyed that, too.
