Pet Peeves

If you rely on AI for answers, you may find out all kinds of other stuff. Is the Border Patrol military also? They don't have boats but they have guns and stuff. I still believe the Coast Guard's main mission is not to blow stuff up and kill people. If you so believe, then what can I say? I am guessing you were a Coastie of are somehow associated with them, right?
Not trying to prove anything Don, but was curious is all. So I skipped AI this time and went for more answers. They are considerd military, I guess because of their past involvement {

I guess the only pet peeve I currently have is the [lack of] quality of modern eyeglass lenses. These darned things get smeared if I give people dirty looks. Spray cleaner with the felt cloth merely smears them more. I have to use wet wipe lens cleaners...sometimes more than one. And the clean doesn't last long.

Smeary glasses make me crazy(er). I have two methods that work... Dawn Power Wash spray (dish detergent with alcohol) or put them into my ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for a couple of minutes.

I have been thinking about the Spectrum two step verification for the last few days. I used to get a lot of *&!@$# robo calls every day. I haven't had one for weeks now. Maybe Spectrum has found a way to block them as part of their improved security. But I'm not peeved about that. :D

Sometimes they are military, but most of the time they are not. When speaking of the recent Venezuela adventure, they said the U.S. military was assisting the FBI, the DEA and the Coast Guard in their law enforcement function. I guess my peeve is really how upset they get when somebody says they aren't military. It is like they know they are not but they SO do want to be. When anybody ribs the Air Force, they just grin and when the Space Force is razzed, they get a sly smile, but the Coasties get angry.

I used to live in Page, Arizona, on the shore of Lake Powell. It's in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which is a National Park Service unit. As such, one would think that NPS Law Enforcement Rangers would deal with any problems on the lake. And the do, but they have help from County Sheriffs in Arizona and Utah, and the Coast Guard. I was not aware that the Coast Guard had operations on lakes, but some of the major lakes do.

You made me go look. I found an article that said the Coast Guard provided support over the July 4 weekend to support enforcement of drunk boating on the lake. I wonder if their presence there is limited to that holiday, on that Federally owned lake.

The Coast Guard website shows their Centers of Operation in each District. The website has a military (.mil) domain name.

Note the inland Centers in the Heartland District. Here's the brief narrative:
The Coast Guard Heartland District is responsible for U.S. Coast Guard operations spanning 26 states, including the Gulf of Mexico coastline from Florida to Mexico, the adjacent offshore waters and outer continental shelf, as well as the inland waterways of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Tennessee River systems.

This is from the Great Lakes District:
The Coast Guard District Great Lakes District is responsible for all Coast Guard operations throughout the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and parts of the surrounding states including 6,700 miles of shoreline and 1,500 miles of the international border with Canada.

For those who want to wade through the Code of Federal Regulations, here is the part defining the Terms used to lay out the Coast Guard's jurisdiction. The clause that seems to define the Heartland District waterway systems is:

§ 2.34 Waters subject to tidal influence; waters subject to the ebb and flow of the tide; mean high water
(3) Internal waters of the United States not subject to tidal influence that:
(i) Are or have been used, or are or have been susceptible for use, by themselves or in connection with other waters, as highways for substantial interstate or foreign commerce, notwithstanding natural or man-made obstructions that require portage, or
(ii) A governmental or non-governmental body, having expertise in waterway improvement, determines to be capable of improvement at a reasonable cost (a favorable balance between cost and need) to provide,
by themselves or in connection with other waters, as highways for substantial interstate or foreign commerce.

I had no idea.

Regarding whether or not the Coast Guard is military:

The history of the United States Coast Guard goes back to the United States Revenue Cutter Service, which was founded on 4 August 1790 as part of the Department of the Treasury. The Revenue Cutter Service and the United States Life-Saving Service were merged to become the Coast Guard per 14 U.S.C. § 101 which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times."

In 1939 the United States Lighthouse Service was merged into the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard itself was moved to the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on 1 March 2003 it became part of the Department of Homeland Security. However, under 14 U.S.C. § 3 as amended by section 211 of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2006, upon the declaration of war and when Congress so directs in the declaration, or when the president directs, the Coast Guard operates as a service in the Department of the Navy.

I hate it when I get a smear on my glasses, and have never understood how some people who wear glasses will pick them up by the lens, and people who don't wear glasses will always do that.

I am so anal about my glasses that I keep an old pair in the kitchen to wear while cooking. I always get splatters and sometimes grease from frying on the lenses and it is so hard to keep them clean. That designated pair of "kitchen glasses" keep my regular ones clean.

I had no idea.
Neither did I, and I had lived in 2 Coast Guard towns and knew several people in the Coast Guard, because they came into a computer store I worked in up in Eureka.

Regarding whether or not the Coast Guard is military...
I always thought that the .mil gave it away. But at the time I lived in Page, the Internet was just becoming public so I don't know if that even existed yet. (1993-1994) At that time the surface elevation of Lake Powell was 3,668 Feet, not like it is now where it's almost empty in comparison. I think it's currently at 3,538 Feet. This video was posted last week. And 0:37 you see a couple of sandstone colored buildings. My room was in the closest one, and at 0:45 you can see Castle Rock across what was the lake in 1993. This reporter obviously didn't talk to any Park Service people. At about 1:32 he says ''...you can now see a Bath Tub Ring....". That Bath Tub Ring could be seen as far back as the mid-1980s when I went there the first time.

When it operates as a part of the Navy, it is definitely military, but during peacetime the military's primary job is to be prepared to kill people and destroy stuff and the military branches have little function other than surveillance in peacetime. The Coast Guard, however, is engaged in law enforcement, safety training, and immigration and smuggling enforcement as well as search and rescue. none of which are primary military functions.

The Coast Guard has chased a sanctioned oil tanker across the Atlantic and was unable to stop it when it refused to stop. The Coast Guard has no capability to board a real hostile vessel. The tanker is now under Russian protection and has re-flagged to Russia and is heading to northern Russia. The world is amused at the Coast Guard failure.

I keep a pair of glasses on the kitchen table for my laptop stuff and paperwork. Every now and again I take them to the sink and wash them. All of a sudden I can SEE! It's like a miracle!!! but I have glasses all over because I keep forgetting where I set them down.

Looks like it did when I was there. We took a boat ride around and into some coves back then. I have seen some yt's that show you could not even launch that boat anymore and they tell of bodies and other items on the bottom that should not be there.

If your wife ever gets what I have always called Terminal Spenditis, run to the hills! And take all of your credit cards with you.

I like your ZZ Top Dog, Earl S. Much. 😎
