Let's Chit-Chat!

I did read that, and saw the pictures, and it does seem to be true. I had never thought about a raccoon getting drunk before, but I know that animals will eat fermented apples and other fruit that falls on the ground. Seems like I saw a squirrel that got drunk on something or other that he ate, too.

OMG ! (And OMG again ! )
I have talked about our Hispanic neighbors who have chickens and ducks that sometimes end up in our yard when they forget to close the pen. Well, just now, Bobby looked out in the yard and there were two pot-bellied pigs waddling around in our front yard ! He went next door and let them know that the pigs had escaped, so hopefully they can get them back into the pen. I think they won’t go home on their own like the chickens and ducks do.
They usually find these critters at the weekend flea markets; and this is Thursday, so they have probably had them for a while and they just happened to escape. Pigs are excellent escape artists, so i hope they are able to keep them home.
(Ken, if this picture is not allowed, just fix it how it should be, please)

Hey everyone. I have been having vision problems and have a hard time on my computer so I don't spend as much time online as I used to. I have a vitreous detachment in my left eye that is not completely detaching, so the spot that is still attached is pulling on my retina. This is causing my retina to be curved which makes my vision blurry. Most times these resolve on their own but mine has been hanging on for months so I'm having eye surgery on December 18.

In order to read or see my phone I have to close my left eye which is weird and annoying. I hope the surgery will fix my eye, but the doctor said it will take a couple of months for my retina to straighten back out. I swear, it's always something.

Krys, I have been thinking about buying an electric pressure canner but I'm not sure if I would use it or not. Do you have new toys?

It is really nice to "see" all of you again. Kind of a nice Christmas gift from @Ken Anderson . 🎄 Thanks, Ken.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your eye. Listen to the doctor if he says rest it, don't push it. I'm looking forward to hear how you have been.

That having a blurry eye and having to close one eye to read anything does not sound like a good thing at all, @Beth Gallagher , and I hope they are able to resolve it right away with the operation this month. How long do you have to wear the eye patch for, and do you wear it all the time, or just when you are reading ?
Sending prayers for you that the operation goes well, heals fast, and you are able to see properly again !

Sorry to hear about your eye Beth. Wishing you well on your surgery. I had cataract surgery on both of my eyes this past year; a week apart. I didn't like wearing the eye patch, but I only had to wear it for 24 hours after the surgery and then at night for 7 days. My eye patch had holes in it and I felt a little bit like "Hannibal Lecter" wearing it.

I bought some kitchen stuff that I probably didn’t need but, oh well. 🤷‍♀️One of the things I bought was a bread basket with a warming stone in the bottom. I bought it to use for Thanksgiving to keep dinner rolls warm. It worked great but I probably won’t be using it again anytime soon just for us because we don’t eat a dozen rolls with a meal! I don’t know why I buy stuff that I won’t use but once a year, or never.

@Beth Gallagher, I pray they'll be able to correct the eye problem, or it corrects itself, whichever comes first. Like probably many of you, my eyes aren't as good as they used to be (and I've worn glasses since about age 10), but at least they are degrading symmetrically, and I can still see what I need to see with glasses, but I cannot read a regular book at all without the glasses now, and I used to be able to. Without the glasses, I would have to enlarge the print on my computer but I have thus far been able to avoid that.

I don’t think that I can read a regular book without glasses anymore, either. I now pretty much only read on the iPad Mini because i can control the look of the page and the size of the print on there, unlike a book that is just whatever size it is.

I just went to the eye doctor for my vision check, and they said that I just have the start of cataracts, which is what they have been saying for the last 10 years or so, so it is apparently not progressing very much or very fast.
They are making me 2 pairs of glasses, one set for in the car for long distance vision (reading road signs, etc) and one pair that are reading glasses, but corrected for my astigmatism, so she said they should work much better than the plain dollar store ones I have been using for reading.

Thanks, y'all. My ophthalmologist told me that something like 90% of people over 65 have some degree of vitreous detachment. It usually causes minor floaters or a prism effect in peripheral vision but doesn't cause any real issues. Leave it to me to have the one that won't detach. 🙄 I don't think this surgery is any big deal but just another annoyance.

A couple of months ago I had to have an injection in the eye. When the doctor told me, I said "you'll have to catch me first, or sneak up on me with the needle." It really wasn't a big deal but it sounded awful.

@Krystal -- I'm the same way about "single use" kitchen stuff. I have gravy boats, relish trays, etc. that are languishing in the back of my cabinets!! I watched a video of a woman canning dry beans and since then I have been itching to buy a pressure canner. I realize that's stupid because I will use it once and then store it away, but as long as I'm interested in trying things I guess I will waste the money!

My wife got the needle-in-the-eye several times. I cringe at the thought.
Sorry to hear that. I know that many people have conditions that require those injections regularly. The good news is, the "shot" is a very small needle and the eye is deadened with drops so you don't feel anything. (They do sort of sneak up on you, having you look far to the side while they approach from the rear, lol).

We are still eating some leftovers from Thanksgiving. I have some leftover ham and turkey in the freezer that I had cut into chunks to make "something" out of them later on. I also still have dressing and some slices of pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream in the freezer yet. Today, I thawed out some ham and made ham salad sandwiches and heated up some bread dressing for our meal. We are full to the gills! That was a lot of bread! What was I thinking! I'm glad I did not thaw the pie out. It will have to stay frozen for another time. I'm thankful for pants with elastic waist bands!

Here is a wonderful Christmas song to help you get past Thanksgiving and on to thinking about Christmas foods, @Krystal . Beside, its time we had some music happening in this forum, right ?

As you may remember, we use a pressure canner all the time @Beth Gallagher. We use it for salmon, turkey, beans--both dried and green--and any vegetable that is not acidic in nature. I half-smoked some salmon just a couple weeks ago that we had in the freezer since last summer to make room in the freezer for yet more food. Canning dried beans is a good way to use old beans that have been around for a while since dried beans that get old are fine to eat, but they must be cooked for hours sometimes to soften and rehydrate, but if you pressure can them, they are ready to use right from the jar just as canned beans such as kidney and navy beans. You can make your own chili beans too if you wish.

I do recall that you use a pressure canner, Don. Have you had any experience with the electric canners? I know there has been some controversy around them but they seem to be gaining in popularity. I'm looking at the Presto 12 quart model.
