My favorite knife is very old from Chicago Cutlery. It held it's edge forever. I never let anyone else use it or sharpen it.
Welllll my daughter's boyfriend found 3 THREE of them at the rendezvous and gave them to me. Two of them needed sharpening which I did.
Chicago cutlery is 'still in business' but the knives are made in China now and NOTHING like the old ones.

I have a couple of knife sharpeners, one is electric and one is a manual "pull through" type. They have both Japanese (Asian) and German/French (Western) blade options because I have a mix of German and Japanese knives.

I don't know how to properly use a stone nor a honing steel. I'm a loser.

I bought a Chicago Cutlery knife in 1974 and used it a lot. When moose hunting with a friend a number of years ago, my partner was amazed at how long it held an edge. He said he had never seen a knife hold and edge through the processing of a moose. Most people have to pause to hone their knife at least once, sometimes twice, when butchering such a large animal in the field. A lot of American technology has been ruined when farmed to China. Look what happened to Craftsman tools. I still have my Chicago knife and my father's old Kabar that he used for hunting and perhaps other things. My dad supposedly killed a white tail with his bare hands and that knife.

I cheat and sometimes use a couple of other sharpeners. There is still hope. I gave a little tool to daughter that holds the knife at the correct angle to the stone but she does pretty well now making her own. Gotta love her A. Indian boyfriend.
