Has this got something to do with "Trump"; wanting to buy "Greenland"?

"Russia warns of response to any US weapons deployment in Greenland"

Russia has signaled strong opposition to US plans for missile deployment in Greenland, specifically the proposed Golden Dome missile defense program. Moscow, through Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, said it is ready to respond with military measures if the United States moves forward with deploying weapons in Greenland as New START, the last bilateral nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the US, expires.

Ryabkov's statement was made in Beijing just ahead of the New START treaty's expiration, suggesting a heightened level of concern from Russia as arms control frameworks dissolve. While Ryabkov did not provide specifics on what the military response might entail, he stressed that an arms race would not occur, but Moscow is prepared for a "new reality" in the Arctic security landscape. The proposed US Golden Dome project, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome, aims to create a missile defense shield across Greenland, but Russia’s warnings indicate the deployment would be seen as a direct security threat. President Donald Trump said a framework deal had been reached to discuss missile defense in Greenland with NATO, but details remain limited, and the agreement appears to have sidestepped Denmark’s involvement.

The expiration of New START on February 5, 2026, means no treaty limits on Russian and US nuclear arsenals for the first time in decades, leading to growing concern from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about global security. The situation underscores the Arctic's strategic importance for both nuclear deterrence and NATO dynamics, as well as Greenland's evolving role amid US, Russian, and Chinese interests.

Countries Mentioned:
  • Greenland (Denmark):
The primary focus, with Trump wanting to buy or take control for strategic/security reasons, even suggesting payments to residents and threatening tariffs on Denmark and other nations opposing the deal.
  • :Venezuela;Trump cited the seizure of its president as justification for earlier actions and warned other governments like Colombia and Iran.
  • Columbia:
Threatened by Trump after the Venezuela operation, with warnings about its drug trade and leadership.
  • Iran, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Syria:
Included on maps of countries Trump had issued warnings or threats towards by early January 2026, often linked to migration or drug issues.

The New Start treaty expires today.

MOSCOW, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Russia is ready for the new reality of a world with no U.S.-Russian nuclear arms control limits after the New START treaty expires this week, Moscow's point man for arms control said on Tuesday.
Unless the two sides reach a last-minute understanding, they will be left without any constraints on their long-range strategic nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than half a century when New START expires on Thursday. Feb 5th 2026

"This is a new moment, a new reality - we are ready for it," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who oversees arms control issues, told Russian news agencies during a visit to Beijing for "strategic stability consultations".
New Start, which caps the number of deployed strategic warheads at 1,550, was signed in 2010.
In comments to the New York Times last month, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated he will let the treaty expire. But he has not formally responded to a Russian proposal to keep observing the treaty's missile and warhead limits for one more year to allow time to work out what to do after the pact expires.

The START treaty didn't mean much now anyway since China is a big player now and was not included in the treaty. I am sure that China won't sign on to any treaty, but if they did, they would not keep to the obligations. I am not sure Russia/USSR did either. I am guessing that Trump is using the Golden Dome concept as Reagan did the SDI (Star Wars) idea. We don't have John Paul II to push the idea either, and he was a great partner with Reagan when he pulled off the fall of the USSR and the Berlin Wall.

I agree with Trump on Greenland if the people of Greenland will agree, I think it is a plus for America and Greenland's defense from Russia and China.
I don't see any major deals with Russia or China being a wise decision.
Also, if the people of Greenland want to sell us and other Western nations their minerals, it would be good for us both.

Trump 2.0: the battle intensifies

Trump is heavily focused on outcompeting China and on securing the US’ access to necessary and critical minerals. Trump toyed with the idea of purchasing Greenland already in his first term. Trump has once again set his sights on Greenland in the battle for minerals. The Arctic has drawn substantial attention in recent years due to its critical mineral resources. Although the extraction of critical minerals in the Arctic can potentially contribute to a green shift, it can also have serious environmental consequences and impact the lives of Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Trump has attempted to secure access to critical minerals abroad, for example by establishing the Reconstruction Investment Fund between the US and Ukraine in April 2025, which is intended to give the US exclusive access to Ukraine’s mineral potential in exchange for continued US military support. Domestically, Trump has launched aggressive measures to increase production both on land and at sea, including in the executive order “Unleashing America’s Offshore Critical Minerals and Resources” from April 24, 2025.16) The high tariffs against China were justified by the need to protect American industry and secure the US’s access to critical minerals.

Trump has also signed an Executive Order activating the Defense Production Act to increase the production of critical minerals, a crisis law from the Korean War that gives the government control over industrial production during emergencies. The battle for minerals also takes place on the seabed, with both the US and China eager to start mining under the ocean surface.

As a response to US sanctions related to the export of technology to Chinese companies, China introduced export controls on graphite to the US in December 2024, an important mineral in batteries for electric vehicles. Furthermore, China responded in April 2025 to US tariffs on Chinese goods by introducing new export restrictions on seven rare earth minerals and magnets. According to Bloomberg China and the US at their first bilateral meeting in Geneva in May agreed that China will pause the restrictions for 90 days, in exchange for the US reducing the tariff from 145 to 30 percent. In May 2025, Trump ordered American software suppliers used to design semiconductors to stop selling to China.

China views Trump’s trade policies as “malicious attempts to block and suppress China” and has been unwilling to be the first to chicken out, pledging to “resolutely defend” its interests. Increasing retaliatory actions from both countries have created economic challenges and geopolitical tensions.

The link below, pretty interesting read, "I'm", slowly seeing what the real reasons are, for what they're doing, "I" think.

China has a nation 1000 miles off it's coast Taiwan. We Have a nation off our coast Greenland of 3000 miles.
America distance from Taiwan is close to 8000 miles, China distance to Greenland is close to 5000 miles.
I'm not sure how to judge the dispute of either of us.

As of February 27, 2026, the dispute between the Trump administration and Denmark over Greenland has escalated, leading Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to call a snap parliamentary election for March 24, 2026. The move follows renewed efforts by President Trump to gain control of the Arctic territory, which has caused significant political turmoil in Denmark and the wider Arctic region.

Key Developments Today
  • Denmark Snap Election: Prime Minister Frederiksen announced an early election, seeking a mandate after weeks of tension over President Trump’s renewed push for U.S. control of Greenland.
  • Strategic Standoff: Frederiksen’s decision follows her surge in polls for maintaining a "tough" stance against Trump's territorial designs, which she warned could fracture the NATO alliance.
  • Ongoing Pressure: While Trump recently backed down from using military force and dropped certain tariff threats against European allies, Danish leaders insist the "conflict about Greenland isn’t over" as Washington still fundamentally seeks a path to ownership.
Earlier this week, Greenland rejected Trump's offer to send a U.S. Navy hospital ship, asserting that their own public health system is sufficient.
