Guilty Pleasures Food Favorites and Snacks

Have you tried any new foods lately, or have some old favorites that you buy time after time? I don't mean basic staple foods, but something that you just enjoy.

Recently @Hedi Mitchell posted about Bimbo Toasted Bread, which I thought sounded kind of weird but I found some at HEB and I have eaten almost an entire package in a week. That stuff is seriously good... very crunchy and light. I have been having a fried egg on a piece of the toast for lunch, or some mashed avocado, pimento cheese, or tuna salad. It's a great "vessel" to carry a bunch of different savory spreads. So thanks for mentioning that, G!

Today in Walmart I was on the pickle aisle and noticed some small jars of bruscetta topping. I believe they had artichoke, red pepper, and tomato flavors. I picked up a jar of the artichoke to try and I tried some on a piece of the Bimbo toast... fantastic! If you like artichokes, pick up a little jar. It's not expensive and is a tasty snack, and would be good on crackers.

What kind of 'guilty pleasures' food do you buy?

I forgot to add that I bought a jar of pickled beets a week or so ago, and it made me think of Al Amoling; Al ate beets almost every single day and posted on the "What's For Dinner?" thread on SOC-1. I actually like the pickled beets so I will buy those again.

Every once in a while I'll pick up a berry-topped coffee cake. When I first got my Breville convection oven, I started baking coffee cakes and lemon curd bars and other stuff I would never fire up my oven for, but the Breville made it too damned convenient. I had to stop. So the coffee cakes (ALDI) are an occasional (monthly) treat. Lately I've also been getting a sweet potato pie at Walmart with a can of whipped cream.

I can almost finish a bag of Walmart garlic knots by myself.

The bag goes in the oven on a cookie sheet, according to instructions. Take bag out of oven, cut open and have at it.

Or use them as a side dish for a meal. I have used them at Thanksgiving.

I keep a box of these in the freezer, also from Wally World:

Anything that is NOT keto. Surprisingly not a lot of things I used to like don't taste as good as they used to. Like Culvers ice cream--too sweet. ????
But yesterday our PicNSave store had some danish at the half price rack. I 'used to' love these. They are made with actual yeast dough. Four or so fillings. I ate each of the cheese danish and the lemon danish. These are the size of my hand! So, to make them less dangerous or fattening, I cut little pieces from them and ate them kind of slowly over two days  .

Some other things I really like is Better Goods products (Canada made) chicken tenders, light crust good in microwave or oven..
Better goods Amaretto Peaches in a jar- tasty. I like the BG chicken pot pie. Not MAreis C, chicken pot pie, but not bad. Comes in family size only here. Bimbo ( loaf) also makes some high fiber bread I hope to try soon.

The other day, I made the mistake of going food shopping hungry. I noticed some Better Goods breakfast sandwich things that are 2 waffle-shaped hash browns patties and a sausage patty in the middle. (Very healthy stuff.) Well, you know I bought a package, and tossed one "sandwich" in the air fryer when I got home. It was actually pretty tasty and I'll likely buy those again (though I was starving so that might have made them taste better). I believe these are gluten-free.

I see that lots of Better Goods stuff is stocked at my local Walmart, including a spinach/ricotta gnocchi. I'll have to give them a shot.

As an aside, that ALDI shepherd's pie I like is also made in Canada, but not by Better Goods.

Kind of surprising to see all these Canadian foods what with those outrageous tariffs.

We always have these in the pantry …they are nice sandwiched with butter in between 2 biscuits

They are exclusive to South Aust , if you ask for them in other states they look at you like you gave 2 heads ..dah ..never heard of them interstate

We also have these …in our panty and are an essential for our morning smoko ..at 9.30 ~ 10 am …if we are not going to be home at those times we take our thermos brand coffee travel mugs and have a small plastic container with spicy fruit roll biscuits in the centre counsel …

Copied this ..no we don’t smoke ….

Key Aspects of an Aussie Smoko:
  • Purpose: A crucial pause to recharge, stretch, and socialize, especially in physically demanding jobs like construction or farming.
  • Refreshments: Known as a time to have a "cuppa" (tea or coffee), often accompanied by quick food items like sausage rolls, pies, scones, or iced coffee.
  • Origin: The term dates back to the mid-1850s, used as a call for workers to take a break for a cigarette.
  • Cultural Significance: It is deeply ingrained in Aussie work culture as a time to bond with colleagues, sometimes called "tea break".

I just had a bowl of BetterGoods corn chowder. It was good...and extremely spicy-hot for something sold at the grocery store. BG looks like a Walmart branded line of goods.
