Grown Children

Our daughter texted us that our 18-year old grandson who is in the Marines is being deployed. I almost had a heart attack until she went on to say "to Hawaii." (So he is leaving Pendleton, @Don Alaska ).

We already have one grandson (Air Force) who is in the middle east right now and it's freaking me out.
Marines are heading to Iran, perhaps to take Kharg Island. It is a small battalion as far as I know and not a large number. The island isn't big, but the Iranians may try to destroy the oil facilities there as they go down, so I think they want to prevent that from happening. There may be SEALS and Night Stalkers there as well to prep for the Marines if they do decide to take the island. I know a chaplain who is deployed somewhere but he is not allowed to say where he is.

My grandson isn't allowed to say where he is, either, but his dad (Air Force Retired) believes he is stationed at a base in one of the neighboring countries to Iran. Austin was OCS in college and is an officer.

What many people do not realize IMO ...it is not about loving or caring more for one child over the other. It is about each child requires a different approach to things. So some require more attention than others. I had hard enough time with two, I can not imagine spreading myself any thinner.

Taking on a bunch of children does have its own challenges for sure. Luckily for me, my three "bonus" children were all very small when I met their dad and they were clingy little ones since their mother had abandoned them all. So I was "Ma" right away, and my two little sons were thrilled to have more siblings to play with. It was a rowdy house for sure and the mountains of laundry were legendary.

This is a favorite memory. One night my husband was working late and the children had a church program where they were singing Christmas songs. I was in the audience at the church and so was their mother. When they finished the program, all three of them ran to ME. Children learn what they live.
