Fires in the western states this summer are really bad!

We sometimes have that @Yvonne Smith when fire travels underground on veins of peat or even coal. Sometimes the fire even survives the winter snow, but that is uncommon.

Just look at the Centralia fire.

The only fire I can find is one in Pennsylvania, that went onto a mining shaft and has been burning coal for years; but I didn’t find anything that was from the Pacific Northwest.

That is an example of underground fires. Any kind of root will continue just like a banked fire.

Arsonist have long been known to start underground fires because it gives them time to get far away.

That does seem likely.

Yes, Look at Hawaii and California. No one tried to stop the fires with technical problems. Then the areas are cleared because the legal hoops prevent rebuilding by the original owners.
