Fake news and the chaos it causes

Good morning to all--

Fake News- let's be honest and call it lying- is very bad- no matter the source.

It is hard to get straight, honest information. Some information sources are obviously fake and lying and trying to mislead the public for private gain.

I don't trust ANY online sources of "news" at all.

Now that AI is so prevalent, the news is even easier for people to fake because you Han have a video of what looks like the real person speaking and saying or doing whatever you want them to be doing.
There was a really interesting video of an older lady explains what it is like getting older and things to do to help stay active. It turned out that the whole video was AI and not an actual person, but it looked totally real.
This, of course, was not harmful, but all a person would have to do is to tell AI who to make the person look like , and then what they wanted the AI person to say on the video, and it would look real.

The primary election ads in Tennessee are really ramping up, almost nonstop with tv & radio ads. Many of the tv ads use AI generated ads and are aimed negatively at the opposition, even if the opposition is one of their own party members running for the same office.

The news media has even covered these ads and pointed them out on TV.

I am sick to death of all of it. There isn’t anything or anyone that can be trusted anymore and I sure won’t vote for somebody that uses fake negative AI ads against their opposition. If that’s the best they’ve got I sure don’t want them in office I don’t care who they are.

I don't believe the talking heads on TV or the print sources, mostly either. They are also out for financial gain and misleading the public which is WHY alternative news sources grew up. There was one year that there were 96 shootings in Chicago on the 4th of July. NINETY SIX. And a main news story was about a black man, hold up in a cabin in a woods in California with firearms that the police eventually set fire to.
I called our WBAY on it. WHY were they reporting that and not the 96 shootings just 3 hours away.!!!! Welllll that was the news sent to them to put on air. Maybe it was because black on black crime was still not a thing?
Even the NY Times has been caught in some gainful things.

AI-generated political ads that are done humorously are fine, as long as they don't blur the lines between reality and non-reality.
Good morning to all-

Ken I must respectfully disagree.

ANYTHING done by AI has as its central thrust the blurring of reality/nonreality. And "humorously" is, like many other things, in the eye and ear of the beholder. I find almost nothing done by any AI- whether political or not- to be anything but funny.

There are several examples of AI generated posts by certain very high officials in our government which are not funny in any way, and serve only to point out the metal instability and very low function of the person posting the "fake" material.

Nope, AI is not acceptable.

Spencer Pratt's ads were AI-generated, but no one but a total idiot would think they were real. Maybe they weren't funny if you hated Spencer Pratt, but if you didn't have a dog in that race, they were well done and funny. I have no problem with that.

The biggest problem with AI anything is that most people (myself included) can't really tell the difference unless there is a blatant mistake. And let's face it, the MSM doesn't need AI to spread blatant falsehoods; they just make crap up, edit videos, take comments out of context, blah, blah. People who have no real interest in the truth will simply accept Peter Jennings' drivel as gospel.
