Exercise, Walking, Etc.

I don't think that any drugs are completely safe, but I have never responded, as a paramedic, to an overdose of aspirin that turned out to be serious. Gastrointestinal issues, I think, are the main potential for problems with aspirin. However, please don't make a medical decision based on my opinions. I'm just an old guy offering an opinion.
Yes at 8am tomorrow. I just want to know before I go ,so I don't get the wrong answer,
Don't be too afraid of Tylenol @Marie Mallory. As Ken said, it was at one time the number on cause of overdose deaths, but I think it has now been surpassed by a number of street drugs. If you take it at suggested doses for short periods and don't drink a lot of alcohol, it is generally considered safer than the NSAIDs, especially for older people. Young girls, sometimes tryin to get sympathy or cry for help take Tylenol in overdose amounts not realizing how dangerous it is. It has been said to be the most dangerous OTC drug out there, but only when you take too much. I have seen young girls take as many as 50 Tylenol tablets and die a very prolonged and miserable death form liver failure. Any drug at 25 times the suggested dose can be fatal I think, so don't do that. Follow the suggestions of your pain doctor at least until the pain abates.

I run 3 times a week, ride my bicycle 3 times a week, and work out with free weights 5 times a week. Most of my work outs are 20 - 30 minutes, so only about 4 hours a week.

Is it hard? Yes, but I do it even when I'm not feeling well.

Why do I do it? Because it always makes me feel better afterwards. Sadly, I have several issues that are difficult and limiting. If I added having no stamina, weakness and poor mobility to that I would be next to worthless. Getting old is inevitable and I'm ok with that, but I'm not ok with not being productive. I really don't want to be around anymore if I can't get anything done and lose my independence...

I'm in the same boat, except I go to the gym and use the treadmill and life cycle. I don't use the free weights, I use the machines.

Sometimes I do all three in one session, if I'm feeling rammy. LOL.

But, I go 5x a week, without fail, whether I feel like it or not. Like you, once I get in there, I'm ok. Even if it's just 30 minutes on the treadmill, at least I walk out of there know I accomplished something.

Like you, I have health issues that limit what I can do. I have a knee that's less than a year old, so I'm always aware of what it's doing.

My main issue, though, is I've had two heart attacks, so I have to be very mindful of my heart rate. I read where it says to keep it between 100 qnd 138 for a person of my age. I usually keep it between 110 - 120. Once in a while, though, when I really get in the zone, it'll creep upwards of 130, and I have to back it down some.

I walk every morning, with a few days missed yearly, due to increment weather. I do at least 1 mile and up to 5. My average is 3. I start by climbing a hill with a 100 foot rise in a 1/2 mile. Most days I do a rural walk across a hayfield road and walk a county road where I greet several horses and ranch dogs that will walk their fence line with me. The cattle I see are usually grazing and pay me no mind.

It is rare not to see a dead raccoon, skunk, or opossum in the middle of the road. There is one spot I call Opossum crossing where sometimes an entire family of opossums are wiped out trying to get over to the chicken farm across the road. I hate those ugly rats even if they are the USA's only marsupial. The kids that love to race out on that road at night, keep kill counts on those varmints that get greedy and prefer chicken over the mice and gophers on their side of the road.

I usually wear out one pair of USA made New Balance every year. I have had great success with comfort and durability of the NB running shoe even though I walk, don't run. Old age has me reflecting on the title of that old famous Ventures tune. I think every guitarist learned it in the old days.

Anyone here ever tried Tai-Chi / chair Tai-Chi ? or is it all a scam ?

Well, I bought a beginners chart. It was only [eleven dollars] so I'll give it a try , and see how it goes, see if it helps?

For most of my life, I have followed mostly a Boxers workout routine. But @ near 77 and with advanced arthritis , it has become just too painful, so I need an alternative.

I've not heard of that so be sure to report back about it.

I think Tai Chi is usually done as a group. It is considered by some to be a form of martial arts for oldsters (mostly). I have never heard of chair Tai Chi. Good luck with it. If you could maintain a boxers workout, you must already be in very good shape.

I have always thought about taking a tai-chi class. They have offered them every now and then around here at either the gyms or colleges. I have also tried one on YouTube. The movements felt so slooooow. I got bored quick with it. I think it would be better in a group atmosphere so I could be motivated, but I don't like being in groups anymore.:D

I never tried the chair Tai Chi, but still do a few standing Tai Chi moves every morning after rising. It doesn't sound like a scam, but there used to be Youtube videos of different moves, some Tai Chi, that seniors could do sitting or standing, using a chair. You didn't get burned too bad for 11 bucks.

That is the discipline! Slow but powerful moves. I use them just for warmup. The beauty of Tai Chi for especially women, is we can learn slow moves that can provide a powerful block that can help not only block an attacker, but provide an automatic reflex for falling. I do one that also uses deep breathing and you can silently add your own power mantra or saying. I have one for breathing in anti cancer cells to go attack any cancer cells in my body. I visualize my anti cancer army kicking the cancer cells booty. I have no idea if it works, but it makes me feel like I am doing something.

I attended a group Tai Chi lesson in one of our parks, years ago, and I didn't like the group thing, so I used Youtube to find moves that appealed to me. My target exercises (Pilates) are for abs and legs since I have balance nerve loss and worn out back.
