Exercise, Walking, Etc.

Still dealing with pain, took Tylenol and Gabapentin, try to just take the nerve pain med once a day unless like now pain is bad..

My appointment isn't until April 7th. I'm calling Monday to see if they can't up it sooner.

It was snowing today, but temperatures were in the low 30s, and the melted water from a couple of days ago had refrozen, so I went for a walk along the tracks and through the woods, about 25 minutes each way.

Did they not recommend a schedule for the meds? Stick with the meds schedule they gave you--or I hope they gave you--at least until you can go a week with tolerable pain. Don't stop just because you feel better unless it lasts a week, especially with the gabapentin.

I do a lot of walking and some bike riding at the gym. I did roughly 20k this week, maybe 7-8 walking and the rest on the life cycle.

I don't go for speed or distance, I just mainly do it for cardio.

I read that for a person my age, having had 2 heart attacks in the past, my ideal heart rate is between 100-138. I get it up around 110-115, and level off there.

Ken do you have any chronic pain? If so what do you do?
Chronic, as in existing all the time, no. I do have pains while sitting down, a result of radiation therapy for prostate cancer many. years ago. However, that has existed for so many years now that I sometimes forget that it's there. There have been times when I would think back to how uncomfortable I was sitting at my desk, resulting in rotating standing desks, kneeling chairs, and a variety of f cushions, and then I'd realize that those pains are still there. Other than that, I have a problem with my left ankle. When I begin walking, sometimes my left ankle hurts, left ankle pain keeps me from running, and that's usually the first thing to hurt when I am on the elliptical machine for a long time.

What do you think about taking Gabapentin and Tylenol?

What do you think about taking Gabapentin and Tylenol?
Tylenol is an effective, albeit painful, way to commit suicide. I have had more than one patient die as a result of taking Tylenol, although not at normal doses. As I recall, it would take about 16 Tylenol tablets to kill the average adult, and that would be less for children or adults with pre-existing problems. However, if 16 will kill me, I will presume that one or two are probably not good for me. I personally would rather live with pain than take Tylenol because it places a lot of stress on the liver and kidneys. I think I read that Tylenol was a leading cause of death from liver failure. As for Gabapentin, I took it for a while, as it was prescribed for the pains I had from radiation therapy, but I decided I'd rather have the pains. I think Tylenol is worse, but Gabapentin also puts undue stress on the liver and kidneys. However, keep in mind that I am not a physician, nor have I played one on TV.

Thank you very much for the answer, and I'm going to definitely cut back on the Tylenol now.
What about aspirin or any other OTC?

I don't think that any drugs are completely safe, but I have never responded, as a paramedic, to an overdose of aspirin that turned out to be serious. Gastrointestinal issues, I think, are the main potential for problems with aspirin. However, please don't make a medical decision based on my opinions. I'm just an old guy offering an opinion.

I run 3 times a week, ride my bicycle 3 times a week, and work out with free weights 5 times a week. Most of my work outs are 20 - 30 minutes, so only about 4 hours a week.

Is it hard? Yes, but I do it even when I'm not feeling well.

Why do I do it? Because it always makes me feel better afterwards. Sadly, I have several issues that are difficult and limiting. If I added having no stamina, weakness and poor mobility to that I would be next to worthless. Getting old is inevitable and I'm ok with that, but I'm not ok with not being productive. I really don't want to be around anymore if I can't get anything done and lose my independence...
