Adventures with Dentures

Before I tell you my tale of my adventures with dentures, I pose these questions.

1. Do you have implants to support dentures? If so, both top and bottom?

2. Do you glue in your dentures? If so both or just one?

3. Do you wear your dentures for cosmetics and take them out to eat?

4. Do you wear your dentures just to eat?

5. Do your dentures cause a gag reflex that when starts, requires denture removal?

6. Did you get dentures from a dentist or denturist?

7. Can you smile and talk while wearing dentures?

I have 2 implants on the bottom. That is all I could afford.
I glue in just the top one.
No on cosmetics.
Yes, I wear them only to eat.
Yes, on the unstoppable gag reflex that happens when trying to talk.
I got mine (3rd set) from a denturist that uses laser and 3D technology and they are computer operated machine made.
No, I can't smile and I talk with mumbles, because talking starts a gag reflex.

I do not wear dentures. I have a few crowns and fillings. I am lucky that I still have all my own teeth given the fact I grew up drinking cistern and well water, until I was around 10 years old.

Same here; I have all my original teeth including wisdom teeth. I have never had an extraction or anything more than a "deep clean" and a gum graft over one tooth. Apparently my over-zealous brushing caused my gum to recede and I had a tiny patch of cadaver skin grafted in there. 💀

My husband on the other hand has had the equivalent of a summer home in France spent on his mouth over the years. He has more implants than original teeth. No dentures, though.

Sorry to hear about your issues Faye. Have you considered a new dentist?
I only use a dentist to check my gums yearly and have hygienist clean implants. Dentist don't know Jack about fitting dentures. I found that out by using 2 highly recommmeded dentist and neither of them had dentures made for me that worked. About $12K down the drain. Also if your gums are receded, then it is impossible to wear anything but all implant supported dentures.

My hygienist recommended a new in town denturist outfit that uses the new laser computer technology. It was amazing and works for me, but only for a short time, but makes eating a lot of foods I can't without them possible. All other dentist said I had to have 6 implants top and 6 bottom. $70K the cost.

I recommend anyone getting dentures to go to a denturist that uses 3D laser scan, computer technology, and has the computer machine that carves them out. The fit is amazing. Human handmade ones cannot match the precision. A denturist specializes in dentures, where as a dentist rarely deals with them and most don't have the patience to deal with old folks and denture complications.

My problem is my top requires the plate further back in the mouth than impedes clear talking and if I try to talk, causes a gag reflex. I can eat with them and that is a win win for me.

I have partial dentures that fit onto the adjacent teeth. While limited on what I can eat with the dentures in place, I can eat with the lower ones in place-covering two missing teeth-but I have to take the upper one out; it replaces only one missing tooth and it comes out easily and I am afraid I’ll swallow it. At home, I rarely wear them, especially for eating, because pieces of food gets under them. I can speak fine with them. They came from a denturist, and my Advantage Plan paid only a small part of the cost because I hated the ones they’d pay for.

@Faye Fox i have always had the worst teeth on the planet. I am pretty sure my insurances have bought five dentists each an island since I was 12.

Years ago a dentist surmised my issues may have been from being pumped full of sulfa Drugs in the 1950s when I almost died from rheumatic fever.

anyway, I have a full plate on top and they shaved the plate back as far as they possibly could because I also have a serious gag factor. I also produce a lot of saliva so I completely cover the well of the upper dentures in glue. If I don’t, they won’t stay in.🤢🤢

I have only my front teeth left on the bottom and one of those is fast falling apart. This is a timely thread because I am wondering about getting an implant where the one front tooth is deteriorating. I no longer have dental insurance so I have to pursue this very carefully.

The Dentist I have been using charges a bloody fortune for anything she does which does not include making the dentures or putting implants in. I have been on the hunt for somebody else so I am reading your suggestion with interest.

I wish we would’ve come with three sets of teeth instead of only two…….

Don't whine, he could be on the Rivera with cheap dentures, ogling all the topless babes. 🤣

Yes, food getting under dentures either partials or full is a problem. This is why I recommend the laser fit and computer cut ones. They fit so nicely that food doesn't get under them.

I would seriously recommend finding a denturist that does the laser scans and 3D computer pre fits, with the final denture made by computer operated machine, set to your personal specs. All the hit and miss manual fitting is by passed. It is an amazing process that worked for me when highly skilled denturist tried the manual method that failed and required constant relining and grinding. Plus the laser ones are light weight and way more made to fit your mouth. Dentist try to make dentures to restore your bite to where they think it should be, Laser Denturist, make dentures to fit your bite as is. Not many old folks care to go thru the pain of trying to correct a bite. Dentist make denture teeth much to big. They focus on giving you a smile rather than something useful to chew with.

The computer also determined that my jaw didn't support a full set of teeth, so the back ones were eliminated and also my bite didn't support full size teeth, so smaller teeth were made and it didn't effect looks and they work much better because I don't have to open so wide to eat, which can loosen even glued in dentures. Also it made some of the back teeth a bit crooked to work with my bite. I gummed it for 4 years, because neither set of expensive dentures made by dentist worked due to being bulky and making my bite uncomfortable, causing clinching of the dentures and requiring a lot of glue to fill in unnecessary looseness. They were torture devices.
