Adventures with Dentures

Before I tell you my tale of my adventures with dentures, I pose these questions.

1. Do you have implants to support dentures? If so, both top and bottom?

2. Do you glue in your dentures? If so both or just one?

3. Do you wear your dentures for cosmetics and take them out to eat?

4. Do you wear your dentures just to eat?

5. Do your dentures cause a gag reflex that when starts, requires denture removal?

6. Did you get dentures from a dentist or denturist?

7. Can you smile and talk while wearing dentures?

I have 2 implants on the bottom. That is all I could afford.
I glue in just the top one.
No on cosmetics.
Yes, I wear them only to eat.
Yes, on the unstoppable gag reflex that happens when trying to talk.
I got mine (3rd set) from a denturist that uses laser and 3D technology and they are computer operated machine made.
No, I can't smile and I talk with mumbles, because talking starts a gag reflex.

I do not wear dentures. I have a few crowns and fillings. I am lucky that I still have all my own teeth given the fact I grew up drinking cistern and well water, until I was around 10 years old.

Same here; I have all my original teeth including wisdom teeth. I have never had an extraction or anything more than a "deep clean" and a gum graft over one tooth. Apparently my over-zealous brushing caused my gum to recede and I had a tiny patch of cadaver skin grafted in there. 💀

My husband on the other hand has had the equivalent of a summer home in France spent on his mouth over the years. He has more implants than original teeth. No dentures, though.

Sorry to hear about your issues Faye. Have you considered a new dentist?
I only use a dentist to check my gums yearly and have hygienist clean implants. Dentist don't know Jack about fitting dentures. I found that out by using 2 highly recommmeded dentist and neither of them had dentures made for me that worked. About $12K down the drain. Also if your gums are receded, then it is impossible to wear anything but all implant supported dentures.

My hygienist recommended a new in town denturist outfit that uses the new laser computer technology. It was amazing and works for me, but only for a short time, but makes eating a lot of foods I can't without them possible. All other dentist said I had to have 6 implants top and 6 bottom. $70K the cost.

I recommend anyone getting dentures to go to a denturist that uses 3D laser scan, computer technology, and has the computer machine that carves them out. The fit is amazing. Human handmade ones cannot match the precision. A denturist specializes in dentures, where as a dentist rarely deals with them and most don't have the patience to deal with old folks and denture complications.

My problem is my top requires the plate further back in the mouth than impedes clear talking and if I try to talk, causes a gag reflex. I can eat with them and that is a win win for me.
