Has this got something to do with "Trump"; wanting to buy "Greenland"?

Whatever y'all want to do with the thread, is fine with me.
Your thread is fine, @Jake Smith , and it is completely on topic. It is me that is messing it up, because my mind goes right to hidden history and rabbit holes when you asked why does President Trump need Greenland for protection of America.
I need to not be going there in a regular thread, and I apologize to you if I have put your thread off course. I will do my best not to do that again.

This is liberal link, is from NPR news.

Christian Nielsen teaches science history at Aarhus University in Denmark. A 1968 crash of a U.S. jet with nuclear bombs aboard eventually led to an investigation of past American behavior in Greenland. It found that a Danish prime minister had secretly approved the presence of U.S. nuclear weapons. And what's more, that the United States had planned on putting some under the ice - a lot of them.

No worries "Yvonne", anytime politics comes up there's always, different opinions. :)

In January 2026, during his second term, U.S. President Donald Trump renewed efforts to acquire Greenland from Denmark, arguing it is essential for national security, specifically for his proposed "Golden Dome" missile defense system. Trump has highlighted the island’s strategic,,under-the-ice location for potential military expansion and defense against Russia and China.
Key points regarding these 2026 developments include:
  • "Golden Dome" Defense System: Trump stated in a Truth Social post that because of his planned "Golden Dome" missile defense system, which he intends to make operational by 2029, acquiring Greenland is "especially important".
  • Strategic Location: Greenland is considered a crucial location for interceptors designed to destroy missiles before they reach the continental U.S., as it sits directly under potential flight paths for missiles from Russia and China.
  • Military Expansion: Trump has emphasized the need for U.S. ownership of Greenland, rather than just leasing space, to facilitate enhanced military capabilities, which may include the, development of advanced or,subterranean, facilities,.
  • Reactions and Context: The push for ownership has caused, alarm among,Greenlanders and,European, allies. While the U.S. currently has, access to the,Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in,Greenland, experts note that, current, geopolitical, dynamics and Greenlandic/Danish resistance, make the acquisition, process, complex.
  • Previous History: This push follows previous,interest in 2019 and,concerns over,legacy,nuclear,waste from past,US,bases,like,Camp Century,.

This does explain some of it, why we would want it, and did touch on Camp Century and the waste. I will do more research along and along, but feel like we never get the whole truth about things, just mostly what they want us to know. There are so many "lies" out there, anymore that you don't know who to "believe".

In January 2026, President Donald Trump reiterated his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland, citing its critical role in national security, Arctic defense, and the deployment of a new, multibillion-dollar missile defense system called the "Golden Dome". Trump indicated that this "Golden Dome" system, which includes advanced offensive and defensive weapons, requires U.S. control of the territory to be fully operational before his term ends in 2029.

Key details regarding the 2026 Greenland discussions include:
  • "Golden Dome" and Defense Strategy: Trump has argued that Greenland is vital for protecting the U.S. from missile threats from Russia and China, framing the acquisition as necessary to defend against potential attacks.
  • "Easy Way or Hard Way": In January 2026, Trump suggested that the U.S. would secure Greenland either through negotiation ("the easy way") or by force ("the hard way"), and stated he was "going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not".
  • Rejection of Forced Takeover: Amidst the rhetoric, reports also indicated that Trump later stated he "won't use force" to acquire the island, while still pushing for negotiations.
  • Existing US Presence: The U.S. already operates the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in Greenland under a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark.
  • Strategic Resources: Beyond security, Trump's interest is also linked to accessing Greenland's untapped mineral resources and rare earths.
  • Danish/Greenlandic Reaction: Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected the attempts to purchase or annex the territory, with officials calling the move a disregard for their sovereignty.
Note: The context of these reports stems from early 2026, following the start of Donald Trump's second term in January 2025,

The Army also imagined hundreds of miles of rail lines buried inside Greenland’s ice sheet. On Project Iceworms tracks, atomic-powered trains would move nuclear-tipped missiles in snow tunnels between hidden launch stations – a shell game covering an area about the size of Alabama.

In the end, Project Iceworm never got beyond 1,300-foot tunnel the Army excavated at Camp Century. The soft snow and ice, constantly moving, buckled that track as the tunnel walls closed in. In the early 1960s, first the White House, and then NATO, rejected Project Iceworm.

I posted about it in the other Greenland thread, @Marie Mallory .

Basically, President Trump did what he always does. He asked for way more than he wanted, and said we would do whatever it took to get it, and let the liberal news channels run with the story and blow it up to crazy proportions.
Then , he announced that if he didn’t get what he wanted, he would put tariffs on all the countries that didn’t support it, and that was blown up in the liberal newspapers, too.

When he went to Davos to the WEF conference , they offered him the right to do whatever he wants in Greenland, build any military stuff he wants to build, and he didn’t have to pay Denmark anything, and Denmark has to keep on financially supporting the Greenland people.
So, as always, Trump got just what he wanted and needed, and it didn’t cost us anything.

i don't know if the video was real. Trump came out of the Davos ? meeting saying our getting Greenland was going to make us and Nato countries safer. China was nosing around and maybe Russia. Greenland has huge amounts of rare earth minerals (how rare can they be then?) And if Trump got control we would not have to bow to China.
I don't see Trump as taking over the world. I see him as trying to make it safer and to MAGA.

The map about minerals is at the bottom of this link and as you can see, it looks like they do have a lot of resources. Reuters is pretty good about telling the truth; "I", believe.

Watched a video today on fact check, of Trump, it was on his speech at "World Economic Forum", but they were liberal, and know their all against anything he says.

This link is Reuters.

While the country's inland is mostly covered by glaciers, assessments of its coastline show the potential for the extraction of several minerals.

I'm not sure about the video, but came across it, and thought "wooh", that doesn't sound good. And "really", it's not, I'm still researching looking for the truth. But one thing is for sure, Trump has a really hard job to deal with. Can you imagine, dealing with all that's going on around this crazy world.

This is what comes up when I Google, "Is there nuclear waste left under Greenland"?

Yes, there is nuclear, chemical, and biological waste abandoned under the Greenland ice sheet at the Cold War-era U.S. military base, Camp Century. Built in 1959, the base was powered by a portable nuclear reactor. When abandoned in 1967, it was believed the ice would entomb the waste forever, but melting, driven by climate change, is projected to potentially expose this waste as early as the late 21st century.
Key details regarding the waste at Camp Century:
  • The Waste Material: The site contains 200,000 liters of diesel fuel, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and untreated sewage, along with radioactive cooling water from the nuclear reactor, which was left in tunnels under the ice.
  • Potential Release: As the Greenland ice sheet melts due to rising temperatures, this toxic waste could be exposed and leak into the environment, potentially entering the ocean.
  • Location: Camp Century is in northwestern Greenland, roughly 150 miles east of the Pituffik Space Base.
  • Responsibility Dispute: The, now-closed, base was built under a 1951 agreement between the U.S. and Denmark. While the U.S. operated it, its location in Greenland (a self-governing Danish territory) creates, as noted in BBC articles, a, noted in AGU Publications, complicated, as noted in CIRES articles "new form of political dispute" over liability for future cleanup.
  • Environmental Threat: Scientists warn that the, as noted in MSU articles, contamination, as noted in CIRES articles of the, as noted in CIRES articles surrounding, as noted in CIRES articles ecosystem, as noted in CIRES articles is a significant risk.

"I wanted to see if Trump had ever talked about the nuclear waste left in Greenland so I googled it, and this is what comes up. I know he had nothing to do with it; but I'm "curious", about his opinion on it; so far I can't find him saying anything about it."

Based on available information up to January 2026, Donald Trump has not publicly discussed or acknowledged nuclear waste left by the U.S. in Greenland. His interest in Greenland, spanning from 2019 through his 2025-2026 presidency, has focused on its potential natural resources, mineral wealth, and strategic military importance.
  • Interest in Greenland: Trump has frequently expressed a desire to acquire or purchase Greenland for national security and economic reasons, sometimes suggesting it as a "real estate" opportunity.
  • Context of Waste: While it is believed that melting ice from climate change may expose radioactive waste from Cold War-era U.S. military sites, such as Camp Century, Trump has not addressed this issue.
  • Focus Areas: Instead, discussions have centered on acquiring the territory to secure resources like rare earth minerals.
Therefore, while the issue of toxic waste exists, there is no record of Trump discussing it in relation to his interest in the island.

The U.S. has been interested in Greenland back to Seward's day in the Lincoln and Johnson Administrations during and after the Civil War, so I don't think the primary interest has anything to do with nuclear waste. Seward wanted to buy it at the same time as he acquired Alaska, but the Danes wouldn't sell while the Russians would.

That's true, Don; and I knew that they wanted it for security reasons for a lot of decades; I just was scrolling and came across that video, first one, that I put up, back when Trump was saying he was going to make Canada 51rst state, then talking about Greenland, and I was a little confused; why he kept saying it. I thought maybe he was thinking of a way to clean up the waste, and that has something to do with it. If you read some of the articles that I've put up here, they clearly state it's a threat to the Atlantic ocean, and a lot of the sea life in it, to a certain extent.

Maybe, but I think that may be stuff to cloud the real issues. Canada as a 51st state was a joke; Greenland acquisition was not. Canada would just be another California, and I think Trump might be glad to get rid of the one California we already have.;)

As of February 2, 2026, there are no specific, public plans outlined by the Trump administration to address the toxic waste, radioactive material, and abandoned military infrastructure (such as Camp Century and Ikateq) left behind in Greenland.
Instead, the administration’s focus has been on a "framework of a future deal" aimed at securing mining rights for rare-earth minerals, establishing a U.S.-led "Golden Dome" missile defense system, and strengthening Arctic security against Russia and China.
Key details regarding the situation as of early 2026:
  • Existing Waste Crisis: Abandoned U.S. Cold War-era bases, notably Camp Century, contain thousands of tons of radioactive waste, PCBs, and diesel fuel, which are at risk of being released as the ice sheet melts.
  • Focus on Exploitation, Not Cleanup: The current administration's focus is on utilizing the territory for strategic gain, specifically by partnering with U.S. firms to mine resources.
  • "Framework" Deal: President Trump announced a "framework of a future deal" with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, which he termed "infinite" and designed to give the U.S. broad access to the island for military and economic purposes.
  • Greenlandic Opposition: Greenlandic officials have rejected outside control over their natural resources, with Mineral Resources Minister Naaja Nathanielsen stating that while they seek cooperation, the future of their mineral sector will not be decided by external powers.
Previous reports (prior to the 2026 developments) indicated that the cleanup of U.S. sites in Greenland was a point of contention, with Denmark previously forced to allocate funds to address pollution that the U.S. had not paid for. However, the current administration has not prioritized environmental remediation in its 2026 negotiations.

Given the Democrats priority on environmental issues, I would have thought the previous administration would have taken care of that.
