Random Political Discussion

Not to dump on Catholics, since this is true of many other Christian denominations as well, but the Catholic Church has always been political, and there is something disingenuous when the Pope criticizes government policies yet holds itself above criticism or even defense of its own criticisms.

The current one is reversing every single step his predecessor made towards progress.

Also, the Vatican has more wealth than many countries amassed from corrupt past, not just donations in churches. Poverty, chastity and obedience?
Taking care of a serving the poor?
I don't think so.

I saw this on another site. Dunno if it's real, but it cracks me up. You gotta look real close to see where the driver's current location is.

Hey @John Brunner -- what the hell is up with the redistricting mega-gerrymander going on in VA? Are all the republicans going to stay home and let this happen?

You would not believe the money spent on commercials for this thing. I see Obama on tv more than when he was president. The lies are Orwellian. There are folks in northern Virginia who say the early polling places have been packed, which is not a good thing. The "Saving Democracy" anti-Fascist citizens sense an opportunity for One Party Rule.

She signed a bill that has Virginia's electoral college votes going to the nationwide popular vote winner. It is now the law. My vote does not count. She's passed a law that non-English speaking immigrants can stay in high school until they finish, up to age 21 or 22. That was done on the heels of a sexual assault occurring there. I know she talked about making Virginia a Sanctuary State. Dunno if that's been legally formalized. Then there's the new gun laws...

The hypocrisy of the Catholic Church as to immigration is enormous. I now understand many life-long Catholics are now leaving the Church, although there are many young folks joining seeking consistency where men are men and women are women.

Vatican City is not housing immigrants, and there is no Birthright Citizenship there. It literally has walls and armed guards to keep people out.
John - that is new? The current pope is actively trying to overstep his boundaries. Just look at the number leaving the church. BTW when I did so I stood in line with my Religious Education teacher who jumped in Rome shortly before his devotional. Religious Education was a pass or fail a whole year.

I believe the traditional churches--Orthodox and Catholic--are increasing, while the most woke ones--like Methodist--are bleeding congregants. A quick web search (to the extent you believe the internet) says there's a "surge" of new Catholic converts.

I typed out a whole bunch more but deleted it, since this conversation belongs in the Faith forum (although I had also noted it greatly overlaps with politics...especially Catholicism.)

Even the Southern Baptist Convention has gone woke. There is politics in religion.
And that horribly sucks, because a lot of folks who have been returning to church these days have found a home in the Baptist faith. It sucks to see the local Good get slandered by the corporate Bad. (I got stories regarding the Methodist National Convention demanding you state your orientation and pronouns if you wish to speak, and the games they played to exclude the conservative African contingent from voting. "Inclusive" my ass.)

Regarding the political influence, a revival seems to be at work because people are seeing Good versus Evil being played out in front of their very eyes these days, especially with what is being done to children in our public "schools" regarding sexual orientation, identity, sex changes for minors, etc. The Children's section of public libraries are filled with it. I read a news story of a librarian getting fired in one state/district because the parents successfully demanded that such crap be removed from there, and the librarian refused to do it.

Grooming and Indoctrination at work. And it is driving people away from being "of the world."

I know there were record new Catholics joining this year here. The adults always join on Easter Vigil, Saturday night before Easter, the highest liturgy in Catholicism. There are also a lot of kids joining or going through First Communion but I don't know if it is a record. I know the United Methodist Church has split has dropped dramatically in numbers as it become more Woke. It was once the largest Protestant Denomination in the U.S. Is is now listed at half the registration of the Southern Baptist Convention. I can argue that the Southern Baptist Convention is not a single church, but that would just start arguments that prove nothing.
