Can I say chickens?

A little surprised about all my chickens laying an egg today, as "cold" as it's getting.




We only have two of the sexlinks left; a mix Rhode island red and Barred Rock.



Then there's Lucille, the one who fell when she was little and got injured so she was separated from the others and lives by herself, in a large cage.



You can do anything with her; she very friendly, will run right up to you, to be held.

I am getting a little excited with the warmer temps. Up to 30 in this upcoming week. Animals are outside although anything to eat is still covered with snow.
BUT
The bird swap and sale is the first Saturday in March. And they often have guinea pigs. If I find the perfect one, I will bring it home too.

Our bird swaps used to include small animals besides birds. Rabbits. Even mini ponies. But they whittled out the hooved animals and then even turkeys for health reasons they said. ??? But no one has noticed the guinea pigs yet.

If they want to restrict all disease-carrying critters, they'll end up banning their customers.

Good morning to all-

If I live in a place called "home" I will have chickens.

Our outback flock is doing well- getting a dozen eggs each day. Our neighbors think quite a lot of us when they see me coming with full egg cartons in hand...

I have discovered that for consistent egg production, I need to cycle a dozen or so new chickens into the flock each year. I lose a few hens each year to accident and old age, but keeping new ones coming on maintains the egg flow. Raising chicks is always fun, too.

It's nice not having to deal with cold, cold weather - depresses the chickens, and me too.

We gave away many eggs to neighbors over the years, and our chickens are getting old, so the plan is to get some new chic's this spring.
