"Home Improvement" - yes, my home certainly needs some. Some imbecile in the flat above me decided that it would be a great idea to turn on a tap, leave it running and then go out. Result: my home disappeared rapidly under hundreds of gallons of water. I now have eight industrial humidifiers running non-stop, no wallpaper, no carpets, walls and ceilings in a mess and a temporary electric supply. Looks like I might be off the air for a while...
Oh no, sorry to hear! You would think that this would not so common. Nope, the same thing happened to me years ago. The fellow upstairs had an over-flowing toilet and just let it keep running for hours. Crazy thing, he was even home watching his whole apartment flood with inches of water that eventually came down through the ceiling and walls of our place, even through the electric box. Maintenance man got up there and turns out the fellow was a hoarder and did not want anyone in his apartment. So, he thought he could get away with no-one knowing? Who knows. He never even ever bothered to apologize. So yeah, I feel your frustration and all the details along with something like this happening! Hope to see you back online, soon. Blah!
Thanks...this eejit seemed completely oblivious to what he'd done as well. No hint of an apology, either. I've been trying to look at the positives, few that there are. I've got insurance. My book and record collections are undamaged. My laptop still works. It's something to work with.
I am really sorry to hear that. This once happened to my wife and I when we were living in a block of flats. A pipe suddenly bursted somewhere above us, and all the water came running down in the middle of the night. We had to wake up our neighbours at 3AM during a horrible thunderstorm in order to stop it before our apartment became flooded. It was an absolute nightmare, but we pulled it off in the end. Best of luck to you!
At present, I have no less than eight industrial de-humidifiers blasting away. What a noise. At least we're getting dried out a bit now, certainly judging by the way wallpaper is slowly falling from the walls. It also gives us a bit of exercise because you have to go out every so often because of the noise and to get some fresh air.
I can't imagine! With 8 heavy duty dehumidifiers running constantly, be careful to watch your electric, in case of an overload, Tom! Good luck!
It's safe enough because the contractors installed their own power supply and run them from that. Not that we're going to be using anything in the next few months - the place needs to be dismantled and virtually rebuilt. All the walls and floors need to be stripped and the ceilings are wrecked, as well. It looks like it could be about three months before we see our home again (or at least what's left of it).
Oh, that's terrible. If we should ever have to move to a condo or some such I'll look for a single story one.
Your reply had me laughing. Not because the situation is funny, but it reminded me of my daughter and I screaming grab the books and albums, and omg save the computer. I am not even exaggerating, this is what came to our minds or specifically out of our mouths immediately. Good you have insurance and staying positive. What I find incredible is that your neighbor did not even see fit to have the etiquette to apologize, either. I wanted to confront ours, yet I knew whatever came out of my mouth was not going to help the situation. It did help that this was a temporary rental and had already given notice to leave. Hope your repairs and renovation move along at a good pace! Good you have another source of power supply. We were told to just let it dry out... Yes. Ridiculous!
Hope the repair on your Condo does not take too long. I am surprised your home owners insurance company has not put up in alternative house untill the repairs have been made.
This is what I did, even though, I got my next door neighbor leaving the shower faucet running for a whole weekend some weeks ago. Her home was totally flooded and turned into a swimming pool because of each house's structure is one step below the yard level. However humidity on her side began to undermine my bathroom room and I woke up the next day with a lake under the shower, but nothing that a two-speed fan has not resolved quickly. So sad to hear what happened to you Tom, because sounds to be kind of great flood just waiting for next Noah's arch stopover. Hope the recount of damages don't return irremediable item rescues.
Thanks to everyone for their kind words. Nothing can happen in the way of repairs until the place is dry, so we have to leave the driers on all the time. Superficially, the place is dry, but there is still a lot of moisture in the walls. One of the few redeeming features is that nothing seems to be damaged in the way of contents. All books, records, electrical items and furniture are okay. All the damage is to ceilings, floors and walls. Another saving grace is that it's summer, so we have long daylight hours here in Scotland and the temperatures are reasonable.
