October 22, 1967. I admit I did not serve, though I was sent the Notice to Appear for Armed Forces Physical Examination just before I was to turn 26, the cut-off draft age. Viet Nam was raging, I was married with no kids, making me a good candidate. Abruptly, it all turned topsy-turvy, as through an act of violence I was handed the necessity of taking over and raising two minor children, thus changing me from class I-A to III-A, I believe it was. I was called to the Local Draft Board Meeting, in the basement of our Post Office, which happened by chance to be across the street from the apartment in which the kids lost their parents. Upon learning of the details, the Board, especially the old ladies on it, aghast upon remembering the news articles, all but tearfully sent me home. Frank
